Scarborough Health Network

Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is a community teaching network, located in one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Canada.  SHN is proud to be named one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2022.  Across our three hospital sites – Birchmount Hospital, Centenary Hospital, General Hospital – and several community-based satellite clinics, our programs and services are designed for the specific needs of the Scarborough community.  With 900 inpatient beds, 6300 staff, and 950 physicians, SHN is one of the largest community hospital networks in Canada.  SHN offers three full-service emergency departments; diagnostic, surgery, rehabilitation, and geriatric care; as well as advanced birthing centres for moms, newborns, and growing families.  With leading minds and medical expertise, SHN is home to Ontario’s largest regional nephrology program and regional community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation services; is the designated cardiac centre for Ontario Central East; as well as an internationally recognized cardio-oncology centre of excellence.

As a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) and partner with many universities and colleges, SHN is committed to helping train the next generation of healthcare professionals.  Education, including medical education, is not just a strategic priority, it is an integral part of SHN’s identity.  The Vice President, Education will be responsible for the development, coordination, integration and delivery of a supportive learning environment for all health professional learners based at SHN.

Building on SHN’s rich history that includes strong partnerships with several academic institutions, including an affiliation with the University of Toronto dating back to the 1970s, health professional education continues to grow every year at this organization.  SHN is home to more than 400 faculty-appointed physicians, who educate medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as midwife, dental, and physician assistant students.  The University of Toronto Family Residency Program brings in a dynamic group of learners to SHN each year.

SHN is proud to support the development of the future Scarborough Academy for Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) with the University of Toronto. SAMIH will address the under-met health needs of the eastern Greater Toronto Area by providing an inclusive hub for education and strengthening connections among healthcare providers in the region. Upon reaching full enrolment, 30 physicians, 56 physician assistants, 30 nurse practitioners, 40 physical therapists, and 300 undergraduate science students will graduate through SAMIH. This will help to advance the region’s clinical capacity across multiple disciplines.  Situated at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, a state-of-the-art building will be constructed to help train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
