Inspired by the university's Gaelic motto, which translates, as 'I will lift up my eyes,' the University of Calgary launched an ambitious “Eyes High” vision to become a leading Canadian research-intensive University. In alignment with this goal the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation support the concept of Alberta Children’s Hospital being a leading academic child health center. Members of the Department of Paediatrics can apply for membership within the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), or one of the other Cumming School of Medicine research institutes. ACHRI is a multidisciplinary research institute with a vision and mission that builds upon the University of Calgary Eyes High strategic direction with a goal of optimizing biological and psychosocial development and health—from before conception to adulthood.
The Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Paediatrics will work collaboratively in a dyad leadership model with the Executive Director for AHS Administration to lead and participate in the development of system wide clinical services. This will service a large and diverse population that incorporates the rapidly growing urban centre of Calgary, as well as surrounding communities and southern Alberta. The Department of Paediatrics has approximately 350 physicians and researchers in 22 sections and divisions. For more information, visit ucalgary.caor ucalgary.ca/paed. The ZCDH will maintain and recruit an appropriately trained physician workforce, ensure high standards of clinical care and ethical conduct of the medical staff, foster maintenance of competence and promote a learning environment for physicians, students, staff and researchers within the Zone. Furthermore, the ZCDH will participate in strategic planning for Paediatrics in both the clinical and academic context in conjunction with the Alberta Health Services Maternal Newborn, Child & Youth Strategic Clinical Network. This offers an important opportunity to integrate evidence based programs and services at a population level to deliver general and specialized pediatric care.
