Chair/Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London, invite applications/nominations for the position of Chair/Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology.

The new Chair/Chief must have demonstrated competency in scholarship and the vision to expand the strengths of integrated teaching and research programs of the department. They will have demonstrated leadership and be an excellent communicator able to advocate for the departmental mission and goals to its partners and to the community. They will have a track record of strong and inclusive leadership and the ability to create an inspiring team environment within the department. They will work collaboratively with both clinical scientists and clinicians to ensure we are delivering the best possible services for the communities we serve.  A key deliverable for the Chair/Chief will be to create a positive and progressive environment through the identification of program strengths and weaknesses and the development of an action plan to address areas requiring more support or focus. The successful candidate will be a leader who embraces challenges and sees the value in making well-informed, thoughtful changes to ensure the continued growth of the program and the clinical team. The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician, with a strong record of teaching, research, clinical service, and leadership, with an MD or equivalent and eligible for licensure in Ontario. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan and academic support.

The position is subject to a mid-term review and will have an initial 5-year term, normally renewable once. Academic rank will be based on qualifications and experience.

The Department of Ophthalmology is encompassed by the Ivey Eye Institute to provide eye care for the community, together with our healthcare partners, and through education and research relating to all aspects in diagnosing and treating eye diseases. Our diagnostic and ophthalmic facilities, which are unique in the area, see approximately 114,000 patients per year and provide testing reports to referring physicians throughout the region. The educational programs include teaching for undergraduate medical students, postgraduate Royal College Accredited program in Ophthalmology and Fellowship programs. Today the Institute continues a leadership role in Southwestern Ontario and offers subspecialty care in all aspects of Ophthalmology.
