CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

Safe Medical Care Learning is central to the CMPA’s vision of being a learning organization. The department’s core activities include learning strategy, design, development & delivery, and administrative support. Safe Medical Care Learning incorporates needs assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation within a continuous improvement cycle to deliver learning to members and CMPA employees. Digital learning products contribute to a blended learning approach and are readily accessible through the modernization of the CMPA website. The learning group utilizes state of the art pedagogical science to share knowledge and improve practice of members and their teams while also contributing to the internal learning needs of CMPA staff, leaders and governance through internal collaborations.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team and reporting to the Executive Director, Learning, the Director, Safe Medical Care Learning, contributes to the strategic direction of the CMPA and the vision for the Learning group. The Director provides subject matter expertise to SMCL in accordance to CMPA’s mission and strategic plan. Working with other departments, the Director develops short and medium-term plans for the development and dissemination of learning to members of CMPA and their teams.

 

The Director will lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver on the SMCL’s strategic priorities, incorporating needs assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation within a continuous improvement cycle. The Director will work collaboratively with external stakeholders and with other Departments at CMPA, within and outside the Safe Medical Care Learning group including Organizational Learning & Collaboration, Safe Medical Care Research, Communications, Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy, Member experience and Information Technology Services.

 

POSITION ACTIVITIES

 

Strategic, Operational, and Financial Planning:

  • Develops a multi-year operational plan and budget to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.  Ensures the departmental plan, budget, people resources and operating activities are conducted in accordance with CMPA policies and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements short and medium-term departmental plans, practices, and procedures that are consistent with CMPA’s policies and procedures and are aligned with the organization’s objectives and consistent with industry standards.
  • Key accountabilities:
    • Working from the priorities defined by the Learning strategy and the strategic goals of the Association, creates a vision involving collaboration to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive educational outreach in a blended model.  This blended learning model will include the design and production of digital assets to complement the synchronous and asynchronous virtual presentations and in-person interactions. This model will be continuously adaptive and cater to the learning needs and styles of the lifelong physician learner.
    • Directs the design and production of digital learning products on a modernized digital platform, modernizing learning and evolving a member-centred blended learning approach.
    • Directs the people resources and operations of the department to carry out the Learning vision and enable rapid design and deployment of learning assets. 
    • Ensures the continued accreditation of CMPA products, which links to standards for high-quality learning for members as well as contributing to the value proposition of our offerings. Actively contributes to the CMPA member experience and fosters a culture of continuous improvement and risk reduction for our members and their teams. 
  • Identifies areas for improvement and consults with the Executive Director to discuss and explore new initiatives, programs, and improvements at the departmental, group, or organizational level.
  • Identifies and assesses risks to achieving the operational plan and budget.  Develops and implements plans to mitigate risks as appropriate.

 

Advice and Expertise:

  • Provides advice and consultation to the Executive Director, Executive Leadership Team, other functional areas, and relevant Committees on issues within the department drawing on specific functional expertise.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team, contributes to the strategic direction of the CMPA.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other departments regarding issues of organizational importance in order to facilitate the understanding of cross-departmental work. Acts as a Champion of SMC, Learning and corporate priorities and change within the department and throughout the CMPA.
  • Establishes and effectively manages external business partnerships, and represents the CMPA externally with integrity, resolve and professionalism. Fosters a culture of quality service to the CMPA’s partners while respecting the fiduciary responsibilities the CMPA has as custodian of the members’ mutual investment in the CMPA.
  • Attends meetings of Council and its Committees acting as Management liaison or delegates are appropriate.

 

People Leadership:

  • Fosters a corporate culture that promotes the health, wellness, safety, respect and dignity of employees as well as valuing individual integrity, ethical practice, inclusivity and social responsibility.
  • Provides guidance to direct reports to coordinate, prioritize, and support corporate objectives, including the consideration and resolution of resource allocation issues.
  • Creates a culture of accountability, provides regular feedback, coaching and mentoring, and encourages continuous learning and development. Promotes a work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, respect and inclusion within the department and throughout the organization.
  • Recruit, develop, and engage a team of people leaders and/or individual contributors to manage departmental business functions.
  • Works collaboratively with Human Resources to develop and maintain a succession plan to ensure key resources and professional development with the group are obtained.
  • Manages the performance of direct reports, and provides regular feedback including the annual performance appraisal. May provide feedback to other members of the management team regarding the performance of indirect reports.

 

Performs other duties and roles as assigned by the Executive Director, Learning.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Medical degree with expertise in continuing education or doctorate degree in Education focused in adult education with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in healthcare.
  • At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Current knowledge of innovative learning modalities and the adoption of new learning technologies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the development of strategy, program design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in operational excellence and change leadership.
  • Experience managing operational plans, budgets, and performance.
  • Expertise in knowledge delivery with a track record of innovation to meet the needs of learners.
  • A proven track record of achievements in medical education.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring individuals and teams to meet their full potential.
  • Previous experience working with senior management, executives decision-makers and stakeholders, demonstrating the ability to interact with and influence key stakeholders.

  • Location: Hybrid – Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of time, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (up to 1-2 days per week). If you prefer to work in an office setting as your primary workspace, you can choose to work out of the CMPA’s office located in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake.
