Chief, Division of Clinical and Translational Research

The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine seeks applications from internationally recognized leaders in anesthesiology-related research to serve as the Chief of the Division of Clinical and Translational Research. The Department of Anesthesiology has historically been a leader in research among University Departments of Anesthesiology, and consistently ranks among the highest in NIH funding and research impact. Applicants with track record of substantial research accomplishments, leadership, mentorship, political acumen, and funding will be considered.  The successful candidate may be eligible for an endowed chair based on qualifications. It is highly desirable that the candidate has experience with strategic planning in research; has fostered an environment to stimulate research endeavors; and has promoted innovation. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential to build and maintain relationships across multiple scientific disciplines while working cooperatively and collegially within a diverse academic and research environment.

The successful candidate will have several core responsibilities: i) mentor a talented pool of rising scholars (residents and fellows) in academic anesthesiology; ii) develop a cadre of leaders (junior and mid-level faculty) in academic anesthesiology; iii) promote collaborative research intra- and inter-departmental research; iv) continue to elevate the department’s profile and impact in anesthesiology-related research; and v) advance their own research program. There is tremendous commitment from the department to this key appointment, and the successful candidate will receive the necessary financial, administrative, and logistical support to maximize the likelihood of success in all the key areas. The infrastructure in this division is already mature, and supports the conduct of complex studies; grant applications; study design; education in research methodology and good clinical practice; statistical consultation; and extensive regulatory assistance.

 The Division Chief is responsible to the Chair for providing the vision and strategic direction of the department's clinical and translational research enterprise and for promoting and supporting clinical and translational research within the Department of Anesthesiology and across other departments at Washington University School of Medicine. The Chief serves as a member of the department's administrative team to provide oversight of the operational and fiscal management of the division's research budget to ensure the effective management of all resources related to the clinical and translational research enterprise.
