Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services invites applications for the concurrent appointments as the academic Chair of the Department of Medicine and Zone Clinical Department Head, Department of Medicine, Edmonton Zone, Alberta Health Services.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and is internationally recognized as among the world’s top 100 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s leading academic departments, with over 240 academic and 375 clinical faculty members.  Research is a major focus, with annual research funding of more than $38M, research endowments of over $30M, and almost 100 MSc and PhD graduate students in experimental and translational Medicine.  Department members actively contribute to Medical Education policy decisions at the local and national level. The Department is supported by an Academic Alternate Relationship Plan funding model. The successful candidate for Academic Chair will demonstrate excellent leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and have the necessary vision and experience to maintain and enhance the Department’s international research standing, and to stimulate teaching and research programs spanning basic, translational and clinical science as well as health outcomes.  The Chair together with the Office of the Dean, will be responsible for: academic recruitment and retention in 14 distinct specialty and subspecialty divisions, provision of academic support, mentoring and assessment of faculty members, the undergraduate and postgraduate training programs, which are coordinated throughout the area; as well as a graduate student program.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is Canada’s first and largest province wide system responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. AHS has recently been identified as being one of the top five most integrated health systems in the world. Alberta Health Services has over 110,000 employees and is supported by over 14,300 volunteers and almost 10,300 physicians practicing in Alberta. AHS operates the University of Alberta Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital, seven suburban hospitals within the greater Edmonton Area and collaborates with two facilities operated by Covenant Health (the Grey Nuns and Misericordia Community Hospitals). The Department of Medicine consists of approximately 417 clinical members across 12 clinical sections. The Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH) of Medicine is a Senior Medical Leadership role in the Edmonton Zone; providing leadership support to the Associate Zone Medical Director and Edmonton Zone Medical Director (ZMD), as well as supporting the vision of the North Sector Vice President and ZMD; contributing expert guidance and advice to matters within the Zone Clinical Department including performance management and quality improvement. As ZCDH, the candidate will have responsibility for strategic leadership of the Medicine program in the Edmonton Zone, with a strong focus on physician human resources, including recruitment and clinical program development. The candidate will work closely with their dyad partner, the Zone Executive Director. The ideal ZCDH will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and a passion for quality and patient safety working as a part of a leadership team. The candidate will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and considered a strong clinician by their peers. To be eligible for the Zone Clinical Department Head Role, the candidate must have clinical operational experience, be clinically qualified in Medicine and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

As Chair and Zone Clinical Department Head, the candidate will perform administrative and academic duties but will also be required to provide clinical care in a manner that meets the expectations of both the University and AHS. To be eligible for either role, the candidate must be eligible to work in Canada, and should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.

The compensation is commensurate with the candidate’s clinical and academic experience and qualifications; however, annualized compensation may range from approximately $275,000 to $500,000.
