Editorial Fellow (2021 – 2022)

Location: Ottawa, ON
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief (or designate)
Type: Full-time | One-year term (target start date of July 1, 2021)

Overall job purpose:
The Editorial Fellow position at the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) is a one-year training position in which the incumbent receives general training in being a medical journal editor.

The Editorial Fellow must be physically in Ottawa for at least two thirds of the year (this requirement may be fully or partially waived for the 2021-2022 term as public health conditions and business needs dictate). The expected start date for the position is July 1, 2021.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop skills in critical appraisal and handling of research manuscripts
  • Develop skills in commissioning, appraising, and editing non-research manuscripts
  • Develop skills in communicating effectively with authors
  • Learn skills in developing multimedia such as podcasts and videos
  • Develop skills in writing news stories and blog posts related to medical and health care content
  • Participate in regular team meetings and projects
  • Attend training courses and conferences as directed and as relevant to training needs

  • Skills in research critical appraisal and peer review an asset

Education:

  • Requires completion of a medical degree
  • Humanities education is an asset
  • Post-graduate study in critical appraisal of research is desirable

Experience:

  • Some experience in scientific research, medical education, writing, editing and/or multimedia communications is an asset

Other:
