Sunnybrook is one of Canada’s most dynamic health sciences centres and is home to the country’s largest and busiest trauma and major burn centre, and is a regional centre for care such as high-risk birthing, cancer and stroke.  Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and has an ambitious vision to invent the future of health care. 

The successful candidate will be a transformational leader with outstanding interpersonal skills.  As the Chief of the Department of Anesthesia, you will be responsible for providing leadership to 45 dedicated and talented full-time faculty members.   Each year, the team provides anesthesia care for more than 15,000 patients at the Bayview campus and the Holland Centre and for a significant volume of cases outside of the operating room including interventional radiology, neuro-endovascular procedures and specialized endoscopy.  Major concentration exists in obstetrical anesthesia, trauma and cardiac surgery at Sunnybrook's Bayview Campus, and major joint replacement surgery at the Holland Centre.  The Bayview campus is also the site for a number of specialized surgical programs including cancer, neurosurgery, minimally-invasive cardiac and burns, as well as multidisciplinary perioperative services such as an Acute Pain Service and an Acute Stroke Program. The department offers fellowship programs in regional and advanced practice anesthesia, medical simulation, Point-of-Care-Ultrasound, trauma, and obstetrical anesthesia.

Applicants must hold an MD and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent qualification in Anesthesia, be eligible for licensure in Ontario and be eligible for a clinical full-time academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.  The successful candidate will have: the vision to advance integration with Sunnybrook strategic priorities as well as with the broader community; the commitment to forging partnerships with other institutions to support the development of integrated delivery systems; experience working in diverse populations; a commitment to inclusiveness, equity and diversity; strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to foster a culture of collaboration and respect; significant experience as an effective mentor to trainees and faculty at all stages of their career; a record of peer-reviewed research; leadership and excellence in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education; and/or leadership in model service delivery as a creative professional academic activity.
