CLINICAL ACADEMIC POSITION – MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGIST

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health Sciences Centre, and St. Joseph’s Health Care, is seeking a Medical Microbiologist for a full-time clinical academic appointment.

The Medical Microbiologist will hold a full-time Limited Term Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, depending upon experience and qualifications at the time of appointment. Medical microbiologist candidates must be certified or eligible for certification, in Medical Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent. They must have an MD or equivalent degree, and must be eligible for licensure by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PaLM) has 70 full time faculty members, and is one of 21 departments in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/). The Division of Microbiology processes approximately 350,000 routine specimens per year within a regional model providing services to Southwestern Ontario. Expansion of the virology service due to the ongoing pandemic was necessary and the laboratory has a COVID-19 processing capacity of approximately 10,000 tests per day. The microbiology laboratory is based in a modern facility, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Diagnostic services include general bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and virology (molecular based) while supportive clinical services are provided by the professional group which currently consists of two clinical and four medical microbiologists. PaLM has a long history of strength and excellence in several areas of diagnostic services, teaching and research, and has an environment conducive to career and personal development.

Due to an expanding service, a medical microbiologist will be recruited to support existing professional services. This position is aimed at an academically-oriented candidate with strong microbiology skills.

The successful candidate’s duties will include:

Service Provision

• The successful candidate will work within a group of microbiologists to provide oversight of the microbiology laboratory testing.
• The development, evaluation and validation of new test methodologies and communicating with end-users regarding test interpretation and utilization.
• Experience and/or interest in infection control will be beneficial; mentorship and support will be provided if needed.
• The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Infection Prevention and Control program.

With career progression, the successful candidate may be required to participate in:

• providing oversight of diagnostic services which include general bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and virology (molecular based) as well as the Infection Prevention and Control service across sites;
• developing relevant program protocols and procedures and research initiatives;
• overseeing relevant program clinical impact; collaboration and engagement; education; surveillance etc;
• the development and oversight of the relevant departmental quality program.

After Hours On-call Service

• The successful candidate is expected to participate in a shared after hours on-call service.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Medical Directors of the Microbiology and Infection Control Programs.

Candidates must have demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all members of the health care team. The candidate will also have a commitment to and demonstrated aptitude for teaching and research. The candidate will have opportunities to teach and supervise at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels and to carry out research activities. As both London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care are teaching hospitals affiliated with Western University, the microbiologist will be supported to engage in academic research and other creative professional activities.

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be primarily composed of hospital funding aligned with the Ontario MOH Laboratory Medicine Funding Framework agreement.
