The University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services invite applications and nominations for the joint position of Head, Department of Paediatrics, Cumming School of Medicine and Zone Clinical Department Head, Pediatrics, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services.  As the most senior physician leader in Paediatrics in the Calgary Zone and the academic department, this is a key leadership position within Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM).

The Department of Paediatrics is a major department within the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. The Department fully contributes to the research, educational and service missions of the Cumming School of Medicine. It has a fully accredited residency-training program and a record of accomplishment in research.

Alberta Health Services is Canada’s first and largest province-wide fully integrated health system. Universities in Alberta are major partners of AHS.  The Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Pediatrics will work collaboratively in a dyad leadership model with the Executive Director/Senior Operating Officer for AHS Administration to lead and participate in the development of system wide clinical services.   This will service a large and diverse population that incorporates the rapidly growing urban centre of Calgary, as well as surrounding communities and southern Alberta. The ZCDH fulfills the duties and responsibilities assigned by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules as they pertain to the Calgary Zone Clinical Department of Pediatrics. The ZCDH will maintain and recruit an appropriately trained physician workforce, ensure high standards of clinical care and ethical conduct of the medical staff, foster maintenance of competence and promote a learning environment for physicians, students, staff and researchers within the Zone. Furthermore, the ZCDH will participate in strategic planning for Pediatrics in both the clinical and academic context in conjunction with Alberta Health Services and the Maternal Newborn, Child & Youth Strategic Clinical Network. Close integration for academic development occurs in collaboration with the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI). These partnerships offers an important opportunity to integrate evidence based programs and services at a population level to deliver general and specialized pediatric care.

The ZCDH reports to the Calgary Zone Medical Director.  All other Calgary Zone medical leaders and physicians in Pediatrics report to this position.  The Academic Department Head reports to the Dean, Cumming School of Medicine.

We are searching for an outstanding leader to be the joint ZCDH, Pediatrics, and the University’s Department Head of Paediatrics. Qualifications include an MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Pediatrics.  The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with academic qualifications commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above as well as demonstrated research and educational achievements, proven administrative ability (with a minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience) and clinical skills. A proven track record in equity, diversity and inclusion and staff wellness should be evident. Strong communication skills are paramount.
