Alberta Health Services (AHS) has an exciting opportunity for a senior medical leader to advance the health and well-being of physicians across Alberta. AHS is currently seeking an experienced, dynamic, and innovative professional for the role of Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO), Physician Wellness, Diversity and Development. The ACMO will play a key role within AHS leadership while providing direction and representing the needs of physician experience, diversity and development to the Vice President Quality and Chief Medical Officer and other senior executives in this position.

An influencer and change agent, the ACMO will help AHS deliver on its promise of an accessible, sustainable healthcare system by ensuring that physicians in Alberta feel safe, healthy, and valued at work. The successful candidate will spearhead, promote and articulate the vision for physician wellness, diversity and development within Alberta Health Services, and will direct and oversee medical engagement to support the design, development, and implementation of policies, tools, and strategies to improve physical health and experience and to encourage diversity throughout the organization. Possessing both clinical experience and a proven track record in healthcare administration at a senior leadership level, you will be able to balance both organizational needs and address key issues that Alberta physicians face in the AHS workplace.

Description:

Reporting to the Vice President Quality & Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the ACMO, Physician Wellness, Diversity and Development is responsible and accountable to create and implement a sustainable, systemic approach to AHS physician health and wellness, diversity and inclusivity, and career/leadership development. The ACMO will play a key role in guiding physician engagement and participation in wellness, diversity, and development initiatives throughout the organization and achieving measurable improvement in these areas. The ACMO will work closely with and provide expert advice to, senior administrators such as Senior Medical Directors and Zone Medical Directors. The ACMO will partner very closely with AHS Human Resources and Workplace Health and Safety to co-design and co-implement resources to advance the overall AHS workforce culture to improve psychological and physical safety and diversity and inclusivity across the organization.

An excellent communicator, the ACMO will work collaboratively with leaders in AHS operational portfolios to ensure that physician wellness, diversity and development are incorporated into the provision of clinical services. The ACMO will develop and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta, and the Alberta Medical Association. The ACMO will advise stakeholders and steer engagement and consultation of medical staff in development and implementation of portfolio processes and policies.

Although the primary area of responsibility for the ACMO is physician wellness, diversity and development, the ACMO may be assigned other responsibilities from time to time in support of the larger CMO portfolio.

This permanent position will range between 0.7 – 0.9 FTE and can be located anywhere in the province.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of eligibility for medical, dental or podiatric licensure in Alberta, including certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Royal College of Dentists of Canada or an equivalent professional body. At least 5 years of leadership experience in healthcare operations including three years experience in a senior leadership role in clinical services or healthcare operations.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Successful record of achievement as a leader, including extensive experience in physician wellness, diversity and development, strategic planning and service delivery in a large and diverse organization. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, client-focused orientation and commitment to providing long-term quality services. The ability to foster partnerships and achieve organizational goals within a large and complex organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated content expertise in physician wellness, diversity and development in the workplace and/or leadership development/adult education. Possesses Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential.
