Clinical Academic Psychiatrist & Medical Director - Forensic Psychiatry Program

The Department of Psychiatry and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University is inviting applications for a full-time clinical academic faculty position as a Medical Director and Psychiatrist at the Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care (Southwest Centre), part of St. Joseph’s Health Care London. The Medical Director is a 0.2 FTE administrative position with 0.8 FTE clinical duties (negotiable). This role will be based out of Southwest Centre, which is an academic centre with a strong mandate for excellence in care, education and research. The Medical Director - Forensic Psychiatry Program role is for a five-year period, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term. The successful candidate will hold a full-time Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) and appointment status (limited term or continuing) will be determined by experience and qualifications at the time of appointment.

Role:

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Medical Director to provide medical leadership to our Forensic Psychiatry Program. This portfolio oversees all forensic services delivered through St. Joseph’s Health Care London. Forensic services include the 89 assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation inpatient beds, as well as an ambulatory Forensic Outreach Team that services a large area of Southwestern Ontario. The candidate will work collaboratively in a co-leadership Dyad model with the Director, Forensic Psychiatry, and will be responsible for the physicians within this growing portfolio.

The Medical Director of Forensic Psychiatry will provide strategic leadership to physicians and staff congruent with the clinical and academic goals and mission of St. Joseph’s Health Care London, the Department of Psychiatry and the Division of Forensic Psychiatry. The Medical Director of Forensic Psychiatry will serve as a direct report to the Site Chief of St Joseph’s Mental Health Care program. S/he will be responsible for providing leadership to implement high quality and efficient clinical and academic work in a collegial, cooperative and collaborative environment. The Medical Director of Forensic Psychiatry will work closely with the Division Chair for matters that require Division advocacy, support, validation or approval. The Medical Director provides leadership to the Program’s researchers along with the Division Chair. The Medical Director participates and collaborates on St. Joseph’s Foundation initiatives.  Requirements:

Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Specialist certification in Psychiatry and subspecialty certificate in Forensic psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent certification body is required.

The successful candidate must have proven academic and clinical skills in Psychiatry with significant training and experience in forensic psychiatry. Evidence of demonstrated excellence in education and a commitment to teaching including forensic sub-specialty residency training is required. Knowledge of, and dedication to, a recovery-oriented treatment philosophy is required. Knowledge of the Canadian and Ontario legal and mental health systems and legislation is preferred. The candidate must have an established career in forensic and rehabilitation psychiatry with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a leadership position. Administrative leadership skills are required to assist in strategic planning, physician management, program planning, quality improvement, capacity building and collaboration within the program, department and across the region.

The successful candidate will serve as a role model and supervisor for our undergraduate medical students, psychiatry residents, and clinical research fellows. The candidate must have a strong academic background and a keen interest in academic medicine, demonstrated scholarly productivity and the ability to collaborate effectively with all members of the health care team and office administration staff. Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance in teaching, research, health care leadership, qualifications (including subspecialty and enhanced training), experience and interpersonal skills. Candidates that have demonstrated ability in the identified areas of opportunity will be given priority. Successful candidates seeking research careers must have a record of productivity, which can be demonstrated through a strong track record of research productivity, sustaining research funding and publications and in addition, show eagerness to serve as a research mentor for trainees.

Compensation:

Remuneration is based on qualifications and experience and could be composed primarily of the following sources; salary, purchase service, fee for service, alternative funding plan, and academic support.

St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s primary psychiatric site is Parkwood Institute, which serves as a regional rehabilitation resources for patients with serious and persistent mental illnesses. The Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care’s mission is to provide specialized assessment and treatment for people in contact with the criminal justice system. St. Joseph's Hospital, Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care, and community clinics complete the St. Joseph’s family of facilities. The hospitals share a rich tradition of strong and close collaboration.
