KENSINGTON HOSPICE

Kensington Hospice is a 10-bed hospice residence located in the heart of the Kensington Community in downtown Toronto. The Kensington Hospice supports individuals who are living with life-limiting illness and their caregivers by providing care through an interdisciplinary team. The hospice is expanding and by the end of 2022, the Kensington Hospice will be 19-beds, making it the largest free-standing hospice on one site in Toronto. Kensington Hospice strives to provide programs and services that are equitable and accessible to individuals who are structurally vulnerable. The purpose of the hospice is to help individuals live well by giving new meaning to community care.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Working closely with the Executive Director, the Kensington Hospice medical team, the Hospice Nurse Manager, and the interdisciplinary hospice team, the Medical Director provides medical education, leadership for medical practice, and strategic direction for medical care through quality and research.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Leadership:

  • Provides oversight and leadership of the medical care at the hospice to ensure that there are qualified medical staff for clinical support and 24/7 coverage needs.
  • Ensures that medical practice is evidence-based and reflects current best practice.
  • Ensures that there is consistent coverage of medical care.
  • Works collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team to ensure that the provision of hospice palliative care is holistic and truly grounded in the philosophy of palliative care.
  • Promotes clinical practice that is based on equity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression
  • Supports the hospice in ensuring there are equitable paths to support individuals who are structurally vulnerable to overall assist the hospice in meeting their requirements as determined by the MOHLTC.
  • Provides mentorship and leadership to palliative care learners when needed. 

Research:

  • Leads and supports research at the hospice in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Kensington Research Institute.

Education:

  • Mentors and supports medical resident teaching.
  • Supports opportunities to facilitate education and knowledge transfer of palliative care both internally and externally.
  • Ensures that there is access to medical education and training in palliative care.
  • Liaise with relevant health care faculties and assist in the development of educational programs as required for medical, nursing, and allied health professional students

Quality Management:

  • Supports the quality improvement program at the hospice by being involved with the development of key performance indicators and policy review and development.
  • Supports the Executive Director and the Nurse Manager in identifying clinical quality issues and the development of strategies to address the issues.
  • Leads the developments and implementation of clinical policies and procedures for Physicians practicing at the hospice. 
  • Participants in the review of critical incidents and complaints regarding the delivery of medical care.
  • Provides support and leadership around risk management regarding medical care.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to reduce the incidents of medical errors and guidelines, fostering positive relationships at the institute level and shared decision-making.

Administration Duties (Scheduling and Meetings):

  • Development of the 24/7 on-call medical support schedule.
  • Attend board meetings, leadership meetings and quality meetings when required.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director and the Nurse Manager to review clinical care and professional quality at the hospice. 

 

Other duties:

  • Involvement with the community day hospice.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

  • Licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Completion of a Palliative Care Fellowship or Certificate of Added Competence in Palliative Care.
  • Faculty appointed with a Canadian University.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • 5 or more years of medical leadership.
  • 5 or more years of experience practicing within a palliative care or community hospice setting.
  • Working knowledge of the palliative care system and partners within the region.
  • Knowledge of pertinent legislation including Narcotics and Controlled Drug Acts.
  • Experience and knowledge in professional roles and responsibilities of Physicians, Nurses, and other allied health professionals.
  • Experience and knowledge of quality care measurement and improvement as well as accreditation processes.
  • Experience and demonstrated achievement in research and/or clinical investigation.
  • Experience in providing professional education.
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge in working with structurally vulnerable populations with a strong understand of trauma-informed care and harm reduction.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to workdays/evenings/overnight and holidays.
  • Ability to provide proof of Professional Liability Protection.

COVID-19 Precautions:

  • Candidate must be fully vaccinated including 3rd dose:
    • Successful candidates will have to provide Kensington Health with a proof of COVID-19 vaccination (religious and medical exemptions may apply).
  • Active screening for all staff, residents, and visitors.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE):
    • Masks must always be worn except when eating (new masks are provided when mask becomes soiled).
    • Eye protection (goggles or face shield) required whenever within 6 feet of a resident or there is potential that they will be within 6 feet of the resident.
    • Gowns provided when entering the room of an isolated resident (most likely not applicable for this position). - N95 required when in contact with positive residents.
  • Social distancing, floor marks and room signage.
  • Increased hand hygiene.
  • Enhanced cleaning of high touch areas.
  • Cohorting staff.
  • Audits- universal masking, donning, and doffing, 4 moments of hand hygiene.
  • Infection control training.
  • Staff who are ill, who come in contact with an ill person, or travelled, are not permitted to report for work and must isolate until cleared by Occupational Health or Toronto Public Health.
  • Any positive staff or resident cases are reported to Toronto Public Health who directs on interventions that we must be implemented.
