Chair/Chief, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University, London Health Sciences Centre, and St.
Joseph’s Health Care invite applications/ nominations for the position of Chair/ Chief for the Department of
Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine.

The city-wide Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine provides integral support to the clinical
campuses of London Health Sciences Center (University Hospital, Victoria Hospital, Children’s Hospital) and St.
Joseph’s Health Care. The department provides the spectrum of medical care from conducting preoperative
assessment to performing the most advanced life-supporting techniques in all perioperative settings such as
ambulatory surgery, subspecialty surgery, obstetric, pediatric care, out-of-OR interventional procedures, acute
and chronic pain management, palliative care, blood conservation management, post-anesthetic care unit,
cardiac surgery recovery unit and intensive care units. The faculty are international leaders in their fields of
cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, obstetric care and perioperative care. The Woman’s care program at
Victoria hospital was the first in Canada to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the Society for Obstetric
Anesthesia and Perinatology for providing effective and evidence-based obstetric anesthesia care. The
department is also responsible for undergraduate, post-graduate: anesthesia and pain medicine residency
programs, and subspecialty anesthesia fellowship programs in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. The
department currently has 97 faculty, 45 residents and 24 clinical fellows to provide patient-centered quality care.
London Health Sciences Centre performed 25,810 surgeries this year. St. Joseph’s Health Care London
performed 11,184 surgeries. There was a total of 8,117 visits to the pain management clinic this past year.

The new Chair/Chief will have the vision to expand on the department’s strengths to integrate teaching, research,
and current evidence in clinical practice in partnership with the University, the affiliated research institutes, and
the academic hospital organizations. The new Chair/Chief will be a strong leader, administrator, and
communicator, with the ability to advocate for the department’s mission and goals with its partners and the
community. As a strong leader the candidate is expected to provide responsible and accountable clinical
academic leadership in the Hospitals and the University. The candidate should be prepared to work
collaboratively with basic and clinical scientists to build innovative, integrated, and translational research, which
are identified signature areas in the strategic plans of the University and Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentistry as well as the Hospitals.

The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician with an MD or equivalent, be eligible to be certified
as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and eligible for licensure in the
Province of Ontario. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed
primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan and academic support. The successful
candidate will hold a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full
Professor. The position will have an initial 5-year term, normally renewable once and is subject to a mid-term
review. Academic rank will be based on qualifications and experience.
