Medical Officer of Health

Lead a public health organization in the Ottawa Valley in eastern Ontario with a mission to protect and promote the health and well-being of all residents through leadership, partnership, accountability, and service excellence.

The Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) has a vacancy for a full-time, permanent Medical Officer of Health (MOH). RCDHU is located in the Ottawa Valley in eastern Ontario and serves a community of approximately 108,000 residents covering a geographic area of 15,000 square kms. RCDHU is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario and the obligated municipalities which include the County of Renfrew, the City of Pembroke, and the Township of South Algonquin.  In addition, RCDHU serves most of Algonquin Provincial Park. Renfrew County and District comprises a network of family-friendly supportive communities and offers an outdoor adventure playground, surrounded by wide open spaces, pristine waterways, parks and trails with all the larger city amenities a short distance away.

The MOH reports to an autonomous, 11-member Board of Health and works collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who also reports to the Board of Health. The MOH is responsible for the execution of public health legislation and for program and service delivery. The MOH provides community-wide leadership in public health and acts as an advisor to health care providers, agencies, staff and the public on health protection and health promotion matters as outlined in the Ontario Public Health Standards. The MOH is supported by a strong and experienced leadership and management team along with a workforce of approximately 100 public health professionals. The MOH will be a collaborative public health leader with a passion for creating healthy communities and a commitment to a community-centred approach to health equity including the importance of the social determinants of health. The MOH will work collaboratively with the CEO to maintain a positive public image for the health unit and positive working relationships with partner agencies.

The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and hold a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or a certificate, diploma, or degree from a university in Canada that is granted after not less than one academic year of full-time post graduate studies or its equivalent in public health. The successful applicant will also have a proven track record of working in an organizational leadership team and collaboratively with other health disciplines and community-based service providers.
