Te Toka Tumai | Starship Child Health is a dedicated paediatric healthcare service and major national teaching centre, providing whānau-centred care for tamariki / children and rangatahi / young people. Starship is part of Te whatu Ora Te Toka Tumai Auckland and provides a wide range of complex medical, surgical, cardiac and mental health services for children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific. Starship aims to lead the nation in providing world class equitable healthcare, paediatric training and research, in an environment where kaimahi can flourish, personally and professionally.

Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

Starship is seeking a collaborative leader for our Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine service who will be a champion for actualising Māori health equity through Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The role provides strategic, operational and cultural leadership across our Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. The role provides the opportunity to shape the future of Starship and to link closely with our regional partners, our community and other speciality services.

The Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Service at Starship provides inpatient care for local, regional and national patient groups with a range of acute and chronic medical needs, including patients with multiple sub-speciality team input. The service also provides consultation to other speciality services throughout Starship and outpatient care, including outreach and virtual clinics. The service incorporates respiratory physiology with a laboratory providing respiratory and sleep testing. The department also runs a bronchoscopy service.

The appointed candidate will be accountable for all aspects of the service, working closely with the Service Clinical Director for Paediatric Medical Specialities, Nurse Unit Manager, Operations Manager, Māori Health and the senior clinical team.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills

To be successful in the role you will have demonstrated leadership skills, although this may be your first formal leadership role. You will be a fully trained Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Specialist capable of providing the full suite of services within the speciality.

Starship has aspirations to transform clinical outcomes, particularly for tamariki / children and rangatahi / young people Māori and we are seeking a leader who wishes to play a significant part in this change, supporting and empowering our kaimahi / people through the process.

We are seeking candidates with:

  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, or be eligible to become vocationally registered
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated Te Tiriti o Waitangi knowledge and application*
  • A flexible and collaborative leadership style able to lead through complexity

*Applicants from outside New Zealand are welcome. For non-New Zealand applicants, prior experience in performance improvement and reduction of health inequities is vital.
