Chief of Staff

The Royal is one of Canada’s foremost mental health care, teaching, and research hospitals and is home to The Royal Mental Health Centre, the Brockville Mental Health Centre, the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research, and the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health.

The Royal has a rich history of caring for our community.  Established in 1910, the Lady Grey Hospital, as it was known at the time, initially focused on treatment of tuberculosis in Eastern Ontario. As tuberculosis became less prevalent, the organization began to transform and in 1961, was designated as a hospital for the care and treatment of emotional and psychiatric disorders. In 1969 it was renamed The Royal Ottawa Hospital and from there we have grown into the innovative centre for mental health care, research and education that is today’s Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with the President and CEO, the future incumbent will contribute to the ongoing development of the hospital's mission, culture, and values.  As an integral member of the senior management team, the Chief of Staff will participate in the development and implementation of the hospital's overall direction, objectives, and priorities. The Chief of Staff will contribute, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to the successful implementation of the hospital’s transformational strategic plan and other management initiatives. Additionally, the Chief of Staff will play a key role in advancing The Royal as a fully integrated systems player with respect to regional and provincial specialty mental health care as well as supporting and expanding the organization’s focus on research and academics.

The future Chief of Staff will be an exceptional leader and communicator, who is engaging, empathetic, and resilient. They will bring significant change leadership experience, from within the mental health system, with regards to organizational and model of care change. The individual will be solutions focused, able to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented, and creatively agile in their approach in ensuring a positive and supportive working environment for all. Highly empathetic, the future leader will successfully build consensus around the right path forward as aligned with the best interest for patients and broader community. They will have the ability to listen and understand diverse and competing points of view and to develop engaged supportive relationships within and beyond the hospital’s walls.

This is a 0.8 role, for a psychiatrist keen to contributing to The Royal’s mission and vision advancement. The successful candidate will bring 10+ years of medical leadership experience working in a hospital setting. They will demonstrate a strong understanding of the challenges in the mental health care and have a track record of promoting an organizational culture shaped by multidisciplinary cross-collaboration and the multicultural dynamic of the Royal’s community and valued partners.
