QEII Foundation Endowed Chair in Heart and Stroke Foundation Research

The Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University is pleased to invite applications for the QEII Foundation Endowed Chair in Heart and Stroke Foundation Research.

The successful candidate for the Chair position will increase the quantity and quality of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research involving both heart and stroke-related research. The appointment of an internationally recognized researcher in the Chair position is a critical step in the achievement of this goal. The program of research is expected to be fully integrated across Nova Scotia Health and Dalhousie University.

The Chair, depending on the successful candidate, will have their primary appointment within either the Department of Medicine or the Department of Community Health and epidemiology and will be cross appointed to the other, with cross appointments to any other appropriate Departments or Faculties.
The Department of Medicine is comprised of 15 clinical/academic divisions and includes 200 specialist physicians, over 100 medical residents in 16 training programs, and more than 90 administrative, support staff located at multiple sites throughout Nova Scotia Health’s Central Zone. The divisions and department play a major leadership role at the regional and provincial level with respect to clinical care, research and education.

The Department of Community Health and Epidemiology (CH&E) is located in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. CH&E is home to 19 full-time Faculty and 28 Cross-appointed faculty, working in the areas of epidemiology, applied health services research, population and public health, biostatistics, and knowledge translation and implementation science. CH&E has many close affiliations with major teaching hospitals along with a proven track record of excellence in funding and research, which allows CH&E the abilities to offer unique learning and research opportunities. CH&E is home to the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), the Health and Environments Research Centre (HERC) and Health Data Nova Scotia (HDNS) and contributes to the regional research infrastructure of the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU). CH&E offers MSc and PhD degrees in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research, and is a major contributor to Undergraduate Medical Education in the Faculty.

The successful candidate will have a PhD and/or MD and will have a proven capacity for independent scholarship and leadership in the field of cardiovascular population health research and related fields. This includes a track record in obtaining peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed research funding and publication in peer reviewed journals. Success in fostering broad-based research collaborations is also desirable. The Chair holder will be granted an academic appointment with Dalhousie University’s Departments of Medicine or Community Health and Epidemiology at the rank of Associate, or Full Professor, including a minimum of 50% protected time for research for those holding an MD, or a minimum of 75% protected time for research for those holding a PhD.

The successful candidate (incumbent) will be offered a Continuing Appointment with Annual Academic Career Development (CAACD) at the Associate/Full Professor level, in addition to the Chair position as a five-year limited term appointment, with renewal(s) following a review of the incumbent in the fourth year of each five-year term. The term will start annually on July 1.
