Chair/Chief, Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, and London Health Sciences Centre, invite applications/nominations for the position of Chair/Chief of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

The new Chair/Chief will have the vision to expand on the department’s strengths, integrating teaching and research with excellence in clinical practice in partnership with the University, the affiliated research institutes, and the academic hospital organizations. The new Chair/Chief will be a strong leader, administrator, and communicator, with the ability to advocate for the department’s mission and goals with its partners and the community. The candidate should be prepared to work collaboratively with basic and clinical scientists to build innovative, integrated, and translational research, which are identified signature areas in the strategic plans of the University and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. A candidate with a strong track record of teaching and/or research accomplishments is desired.

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation has a long history of national and international accomplishments with excellence in many areas, including electromyography; neuromuscular disease; spasticity management; amputee rehabilitation; neurorehabilitation (including stroke, brain injury, and spinal cord injury); pain management (including interventional procedures); and evidence-based rehabilitation research. There are more than 600 inpatient admissions per year to our regional rehabilitation programs, serving a catchment area of approximately two million people.

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is comprised of 12 physiatrists (with growth potential) with a variety of expertise and knowledge. The full-time physiatrists interact extensively with affiliates in allied health, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Rehabilitation Sciences. The hospital-based Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation programs provide a comprehensive array of clinical inpatient, ambulatory, and community outreach care. The educational programs encompass teaching for undergraduate medical students and a postgraduate Royal College accredited residency program. All department members participate in research focusing on clinical research, evidence-based rehabilitation, quality improvement, and education with a long history of national and international accomplishments. Annual research funding within the Department totals within the range of $2-to-$3 million dollars.

The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician with an MD or equivalent, be eligible to be certified as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario, and have specialty qualifications in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan and academic support. The successful candidate will hold a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The position is subject to a mid-term review and will have an initial 5-year term, normally renewable once. Academic rank will be based on qualifications and experience.
