The Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) are jointly recruiting a new academic, clinical and administrative leader for the University and Central Zone Department of Emergency Medicine.  This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and accomplished emergency medicine physician with proven leadership, vision, clinical and academic experience to lead this dynamic department.  

The Department of Emergency Medicine is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and is known as a leader in the provision of emergency medical care in the Maritime Provinces.  The Department is firmly committed to excellence in the provision of clinical care, education, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as research and continuing education.  

As the academic Head, the incumbent will be responsible to lead all teaching and research programs which are predominantly carried out at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, the Saint John Regional Hospital and the Horizon Health Network, and the IWK Health Centre which serves as the tertiary care referral center for Maritime children, youth, and women.  

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is the largest employer in the province.  More than 23,000 employees, 2,500 physicians and 7,000 volunteers combine to provide care at more than 45 facilities throughout the province.  The Central Zone provides core health services to 400,000 Halifax region residents (40% of the population of Nova Scotia) and tertiary and quaternary acute care services to residents of Atlantic Canada. The QEII Health Sciences Centre is the principal teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University, and a centre for health care research.   

As the clinical Head, the incumbent will be responsible to provide clinical leadership to all emergency departments functioning in the Central Zone to ensure the full mandate of the Department is functioning optimally. 

The Department Head position is a five-year, limited term academic appointment.  A Continuing Appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine will also be offered to the successful applicant. 

The successful candidate will have an MD Degree or equivalent, hold or be eligible for medical licensure in Nova Scotia and hold or be eligible to sit for certification in emergency medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
