Emergency Physician

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Kelowna General Hospital is seeking emergency physicians to join our rapidly expanding and dynamic group.  Demonstrated academic interest/experience in medical education, simulation, research, and/or quality improvement would be an asset.

Kelowna General Hospital is a 400-bed tertiary hospital serving the Southern Interior of B.C. and acting as a referral center for Interior Health.  Facilities are brand-new, including new patient care towers, a new ED, and the Interior Heart and Surgical Center.  The hospital is a Level 2 Trauma Center, performs coronary revascularizations, open heart surgery and ECMO, and is the pediatric referral center for the Region.

The Emergency Department serves a population of 200,000, in the fastest growing city in B.C. and the fifth fastest in Canada.  Our ED volumes are increasing rapidly, seeing 85,000 in 2017.  We are a full-service ED and have excellent specialist and consultant back-up.  Our Department has an active FRCPC Emergency Residency program and we teach residents and medical students, including visiting students.  We are affiliated with UBC-Southern Medicine Program and have department members who have leadership roles within the Medical School.  We have an active research program, ultrasound program, and simulation program.   Compensation is extremely competitive for B.C.; we are paid fee-for service with excellent rates for teaching and quality improvement work.

Clinic Details — Kelowna General Hospital:
Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 85,000 ED visits yearly. Adjacent to Kelowna General is the brand new Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features;  13 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac. Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, larger operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a University Health Science Center affiliated with UBC’s Southern Medical Program. KGH participates in training Royal College Emergency Medicine Physicians and Family Physicians. With the state-of-the-art Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Qualifications:

• Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
• Doctorate in Medicine
• Certificant of College of Family Physicians of Canada-Emerg Med (CCFP-EM)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
• Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification (ATLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS)
• Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
• Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory

Call Schedule:

• Hours of work: Full time
• Shifts 6-8 hours

Compensation:

• Payment Structure: FFS
• Estimated Gross Income: ~ 325,000

Additional Incentives:

• Relocation assistance up to $10,000 maximum or $15,000 maximum if move is over 3,000 kms/international (with eligible receipts)
