The overall purpose of the health service is to improve the health and well-being of people in Ireland by keeping people healthy, providing the healthcare people need, delivering high quality services and getting best value from health system resources.

The Health Service Executive is the largest public sector employer in the country. The public health service has a budget of Ä14.5 billion in 2018 and over 110,000 staff. The Government has committed to a significant programme of health reform arising from the Sláintecare Report and the new Director General will have a leading role in its implementation.

The Director General’s role is to lead the HSE and to manage and be accountable for the operation of the Executive.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Significant strategic leadership experience with a proven track record of organisational management and improvement, preferably in a distributed and highly complex organisation;

• Demonstrable leadership of transformational change and reconfiguration in complex environments and a track record in implementing major system-wide reform;

• An ability to collaborate and work effectively with partners and key stakeholders and have a record of success in communicating, influencing and engaging at the highest levels;

• A track record of managing large budgets and getting the best from an Executive team.
