Chair, Oncology Panel University Health Network (UHN) Research Ethics Board

UHN, Canada’s largest research hospital, is seeking nominations for the position of Chair of the UHN Research Ethics Board Oncology Panel. The successful candidate will be appointed as UHN REB Chair, Oncology by the Executive Vice President (EVP of Science and Research and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), and represent the Oncology Panel. The Chair of the Oncology Panel ensures the appropriate review of oncology research involving humans submitted to the Oncology Panel at UHN. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is one of the largest and most active cancer research centres in North America with approximately 20% of its patients on clinical trials and nearly half of its patients involved in some type of clinical study.

The UHN Research Ethics Board (REB) oversees all research involving humans conducted under the auspices of UHN to ensure that such research meets scientific and ethical standards in order to protect research participants. The REB is vested with the responsibility and authority to approve, recommend modifications to, reject or terminate any proposed or ongoing research involving humans conducted by UHN staff or students. The REB is also delegated the authority to review and approve amendments, to monitor reports of unanticipated problems, and to conduct continuing reviews on all approved research studies.

Position Responsibilities

The Chair is accountable to the EVP Science and Research. The Chair is also accountable to the MAC for research ethics matters on behalf of the Oncology Panel. In the event that the Chair is not able to fulfill his or her duties temporarily or permanently, another Chair(s)/Vice Chair (or delegate) shall assume responsibility on an interim basis.

Position Qualifications

  1. PhD, MD, regulated healthcare professional or equivalent expertise in bioethics. Typically, an MD licensed in Ontario with experience conducting greater-than-minimal risk biomedical research on human subjects.
  2. Experience in performing research involving humans
  3. Understanding of research study design
  4. Working knowledge of, local, national international regulations, guidelines and policies included but not limited to:
    1. Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS): Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans
    2. Declaration of Helsinki, The Belmont Report
    3. International Conference on Harmonization Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) Guidelines
