Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Surgery, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University and its affiliated teaching hospitals. We are searching for an outstanding academic physician with proven administrative experience and strong leadership skills who, as Head, will draw on strong interpersonal and organizational skills to develop and manage teams that will foster excellence in teaching, patient care and research within the Department. The qualified applicant must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The Department of Surgery includes the divisions of: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery.    The Department has a complement of 46 Geographical Full-Time surgeons including two SEAMO Clinician Scientists and one SEAMO Medical Education Scholar, along with 34 Adjunct appointees from various academic fields. Both General Surgery and Orthopedics have accredited residency training programs. The Department has been amongst the first in Canada to introduce Competency Based Education to all its training programs. This ambitious endeavor has been a major success and is positioning the University as a leader in medical education across the country. The Department contributes to teaching undergraduate medical students as well as, graduate students at the Masters, PhD and postdoctoral levels.

The Department of Surgery has a strong history of research activities. This commitment is strengthened by the support of a CIHR Tier II Canada Research Chair, a Queen’s National Scholar, an endowed departmental research chair, a departmentally-based PhD Epidemiologist, as well as, several cross appointed researchers. The collaborative research efforts of the Department cover a broad range of scholarship initiatives, including clinical trials, educational research and basic and translational research. There is a strong emphasis in bringing clinician investigators into research teams that include other disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences and colleagues from across campus. In particular, there are strong collaborations between the Department and the academic departments of engineering, computer sciences and neurosciences.  Tissue engineering, image guided surgery and nuclear magnetic resonance intra-operative characterization of tissue are emerging strengths.   Further information may be obtained by visiting the Department of Surgery website at http://surgery.queensu.ca/
