General Internist

The General Internal Medicine division provides two main services- an on-call consultative service and hospital-based clinics and diagnostics. General internists provide 7-8 call per month with an interesting and varied patient population. The service model is essentially consultation only with the large majority of patients being admitted to the well developed hospital service. General Internists remain MRP while on call for a small number of higher acuity patients in the step-down unit- typically 1-4 patients. General internists are well supported with separate call schedules for ICU, Cardiology, Nephrology and Gastroenterology.

The hospital based clinics include exercise stress tests, supervision of myocardial perfusion imaging, a vascular disease risk factor modification clinic, a pre-operative clinic, and interpretation of ECGs and holter monitors.

Royal Inland Hospital provides an excellent working environment with a highly collegial medical/surgical and allied health staff. There is a regular rotation of GIM fellows from UBC as well as family practice residents and medical students that rotate through Royal Inland Hospital providing clinical service and opportunities for teaching. A typical work schedule includes two weeks of call and clinic alternating, a four day week of clinics and a week off. Holidays are negotiable usually 4-12 weeks per year depending on the services ability to accommodate. Sub-specialists interested in practicing general internal medicine half-time along with their subspecialty are encouraged to apply.
