Applications are invited for the position of Physician-In-Chief, Department of Medicine, at St. Michael’s Hospital. This is a full-time Clinical Academic appointment and the successful candidate must be eligible for appointment or promotion to the rank of Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019, or as mutually agreed upon, for a five-year term, renewable once upon successful review.

St. Michael’s is Canada’s leading Catholic Academic Health Sciences Center, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and is part of Unity Health Toronto, a network that includes St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare. Located in downtown Toronto, St. Michael’s provides secondary through quaternary care for Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. The Hospital hosts approximately 521,000 ambulatory visits, and cares for over 25,000 inpatients in more than 460 beds.  St. Michael’s is home to the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, encompassing the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, which integrates researchers, educators, and clinicians to advance patient care.

The Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department at St. Michael’s Hospital with 155 Active Staff Physicians, 92 Courtesy Physicians, and 25 Clinical Associates across 14 divisions. The department provides high quality ambulatory and inpatient clinical care with 176 inpatient beds that include subspecialty wards and a 70 bed General Internal Medicine Clinical Teaching Unit. The department has a long tradition of excellence in education and undergraduate medicine teaching through the University of Toronto’s Fitzgerald Academy as well as comprehensive postgraduate teaching.  Medicine at St. Michael’s is a research-intensive department with 41 clinician-scientists, 27 clinician-investigators, and 2 research scientists supported by over $18 million in peer-reviewed external salary support and $32 million in research operating support from all sources.  Members of the department hold 17 endowed chairs, 2 term chairs and 2 professorships.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic individual with excellent leadership skills and previous administrative experience with a strong commitment to excellence in clinical care, quality improvement, education, and research.  While this role is based at St. Michael’s Hospital, this individual will foster partnerships and collaboration within both Unity Health Toronto and the broader health care system, contributing to new innovative models of care for patients. The successful candidate will have a personal record of excellence in academic accomplishment and leadership in research and/or education.  Excellence will be evidenced by sustained, high-impact publications in leading internationally-recognized journals, conference presentations, distinguished awards and accolades for creative professional/educational/research activity. This individual will promote equity and diversity in the department, recognizing this as a major determinant of success.

The Physician-in-Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic activities within the Department and will ensure the highest quality in patient care services. He/she will ensure the growth of the departmental research and education programs and will foster collaborations with the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and external partners.

The qualified applicant will, or be eligible to, hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Medicine and/or one of its subspecialties and medical licensure in the province of Ontario.  The successful applicant must have status to be eligible to hold the Squires-Chalmers Chair for the Physician-in-Chief at the Department of Medicine, St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
