With over 1,000 undergraduate students, around 600 graduate students, 941 medical residents, and 168 postdoctoral fellows, the Faculty’s goal is to graduate qualified, compassionate and inquisitive practitioners and researchers accomplished in health-care delivery and scholarship. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has some of the finest teachers in the university and country, with over 670 tenure-track faculty members, over 1,900 clinical academic colleagues, and 2,195 administrative, clinical and research staff. Finally, the undergraduate and graduate students participate in clinical training at the North Campus as well as a large number of clinical teaching sites locally and in Northern Alberta.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is responsible for the leadership and administration of all aspects of the operations of this award-winning faculty. In addition to the role of senior officer of the Faculty and a member of Deans’ Council, the Dean is a senior administrator of the University, and plays a key leadership role in the healthcare system in the Province of Alberta. The Dean will foster an environment in which world-leading clinical training, research and excellence in teaching and engaged scholarship flourish. As the face of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, the Dean is a champion of curricular initiatives, research and scholarship, professional training, global outreach, and recruitment of high-quality faculty and student talent. The Dean will cultivate an inclusive and health promoting environment in which learners, faculty and staff thrive.
The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) who has established a distinguished academic record in research, teaching and service, and a demonstrated record of outstanding leadership. With excellent management and leadership capabilities, the incumbent will provide vision and direction to further strengthen the faculty’s superior educational programs, research innovation and reputation on a national and international scale. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent communication skills including experience in fund development and demonstrate a high level of integrity and commitment to academic values. The ideal candidate will have the ability to engage and inspire faculty and staff and be known for embracing a highly collegial and collaborative operating style.

This position is in accordance with University terms and conditions, and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be competitive with public research-intensive post-secondary institutions. Components of compensation will include base salary, a comprehensive benefits package (which can be viewed at www.hrs.ualberta.ca), and additional negotiated benefits applicable to the position.
