Child Psychiatry Practice Opportunities

The Department of Psychiatry at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) is actively seeking two permanent full time General Child Psychiatrists. Experience in psychotherapy including cognitive behavioural therapy, and an interest in personality disorders are considered assets.

The Sudbury & District Mental Health system currently has 15 psychiatrists on staff. Their hospital-based practices have access to 60 acute adult psychiatric beds and 9 children and adolescent beds for the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Program. The hospital has extensive community-based mental health and addictions programs that integrate with their adult, children ,and adolescent acute services to provide a full continuum of care. Our Hospital also hosts extensive institutional and community-based mental health and addiction services employing 350 staff and serving both urban and rural populations.

The successful applicant will be responsible for diagnosing and treating child and adolescent inpatients and outpatients with mental illness, practicing in community clinics, and acting as a consultant to other physicians and to school services. Inpatient services will be completed at the HSN main site (41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury) and HSN Kirkwood site (680 Kirkwood Drive, Sudbury), community clinics are facilitated through the Sudbury Mental Health and Addictions Program (127 Cedar Street, Sudbury). After hours and weekends, a G.P. is on first call for Psychiatry, all Department members are expected to participate in 1-in-15 call for evening and weekend emergencies. English language skills are required, French skills would be considered an asset.

Remuneration is competitive with other psychiatric facilities while providing ample opportunity for private office-based work. Average compensation ranges from $250,000- $350,000 per year via fee-for-service billing to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), an additional $60,000 annually is earned through sessional fees.

As part of this position the physician is required to obtain academic appointment at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), and become involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. Teaching is conducted at both HSN’s Kirkwood and main site. Research opportunities are also available with HSN’s affiliated research institute, HSNRI. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in Ontario and have obtained or be eligible to obtain specialty qualifications from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
