Head, Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management & Perioperative Medicine

Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine and Nova Scotia Health Authority and IWK Health Centre

The Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and the IWK Health Centre (IWK) are jointly recruiting an academic and administrative leader for the University and Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management & Perioperative Medicine for the NSHA Central Zone and the IWK Health Centre (Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology). This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and accomplished individual with demonstrated leadership, vision, and clinical and academic experience to lead the clinical and academic mandate of this dynamic department.

The Department offers a fully accredited university residency education program in Anesthesiology that meets all the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Department members are integrated into pain management and perioperative medicine programs and basic science departments at all clinical sites and the Faculty of Medicine. Subspecialization is encouraged within all affiliated sites of the Department.

The combined role of the Head of the Dalhousie, NSHA Central Zone and the IWK Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine requires dynamic leadership and a vision for both the clinical and academic mandates of the Department. This vision, together with the management skills necessary to effect excellence in care, education and research within available resources is required. The ability to align strategically and operationally within an integrated health system is also necessary.

The NSHA is the largest employer in the province. More than 23,000 employees, 2,500 physicians and 7,000 volunteers combine to provide care at more than 45 facilities throughout the province. The Central Zone provides core health services to 400,000 Halifax region residents (40% of the population of Nova Scotia) and tertiary and quaternary acute care services to residents of Atlantic Canada. The QEII Health Sciences Centre is the principal teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University, and a centre for health care research.

The Joint Head will be appointed for a five-year term position, potentially renewable for another term. The head will be responsible for the administration and development of clinical, teaching and research programs in the Department and its affiliated teaching hospitals.

Responsibilities of the Joint Head also include teaching programs and research at the IWK. The IWK provides quality care to women, children, youth and families in the Maritimes and beyond. It is engaged in leading-edge research, works to promote healthy lifestyles for families, and supports education opportunities for health professionals and their learners. Services provided by the IWK are delivered through three programs: Children’s Health, Mental Health and Addictions, and Women’s and Newborn Health.

Dalhousie is the leading graduate and research university of Atlantic Canada, with more than 18,500 students, including 3,500 in graduate programs, from 115 countries. Its medical school, founded in 1868, teaches scientific excellence and humanity in medicine, facilitates leading health research, influences social and health policy, and helps drive the regional economy. Through Dalhousie, the Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine is affiliated with New Brunswick’s Horizon Health Network and has additional affiliated staff throughout the Maritime provinces.
