2. JOB PURPOSE:

Dual Purpose:

1. Half time: Lead role in conducting and overseeing clinical research at Naufar.

2. Half time: Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with substance use disorders and patients with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. To deliver state of the art, internationally recognized, therapeutic interventions to patients.

4. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Description

Clinical Care

  • Assess and diagnose mental health and substance use disorders in accordance with internationally accepted standards.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide a high standard of care, which encompasses clinical assessment, treatment and management of patients across a wide range of clinical areas including mental health conditions while complying with internationally recognised standards.
  • Assess patient needs, strengths, weaknesses, and behaviours through interviews, direct observation, diagnostic testing and pertinent collateral information to initiate a comprehensive management plan that best meets patients’ needs.
  • Perform a compressive risk assessment and devise management strategies to effectively mitigate and manage risk.
  • Examine or conduct pertinent laboratory or diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribe medications for treatment of mental, emotional or behavioural disorders and substance use disorders, while complying with local and recognised international prescribing guidelines.
  • Provide supervision to other staff and provide specialist interventions for new or emerging drugs of misuse to better deal with these difficult cases.
  • Safeguard patient confidentiality.

Relationship Management and Collaboration

  • Liaise with external health care providers to facilitate transfer of patients.
  • Liaise with law enforcement bodies, after approval from relevant authority in Naufar, to assess, screen and accept referrals to Naufar.

Medical Records

  • Comply with internationally accepted standards of documenting in patient records.

Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) Involvement

  • Participate in MDT meetings, discussions, and protocols as defined by the appropriate Operational and Clinical Unit Manuals.

Research and Education

  • Lead and oversee Naufar clinical research
  • Chair Research Subcommittee
  • Identify and propose research questions and assist in conducting clinical research to add to the evidence base of addiction treatment and related areas.
  • Fulfil continuing professional development requirements and participate in relevant learning opportunities like conferences or seminars to enhance personal expertise. To apply the expertise to contribute to continuous improvement in quality of patient care at Naufar.
  • Assist in educating the broader Naufar staff group to gain a better understanding of addiction, mental health and the role all staff play in the providing state of the art clinical care.

Contribute to the identification of opportunities for the continuous improvement of departmental systems, processes and practices in comparison to recognised standards to improve efficiency.

Reporting

  • Prepare relevant reports in a timely and accurate manner to meet Naufar’s requirements.

7. CONTEXT, WORK ENVIRONMENT AND DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:

  • Key decisions having significant impact on the department are referred to the direct manager for approval before implementation.
  • Exercise financial and non-financial authority as per the level established by the Naufar management and stipulated in the delegation of authority.
  • The job requires flexibility to work on call, day or night shift as needed.

8. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Professional/Academic Qualifications:

(Essential)

  • Medical degree followed by specialist training in one or more of the following areas: addictions psychiatry, dual diagnosis, personality disorder (CCT or equivalent).
  • Qualified and licensed Psychiatrist.
  • Up-to-date CPD in relevant areas.
  • PhD in an area relevant to psychiatry and/or substance use disorders (desirable)

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in substance use disorders and/or psychiatry.
  • Lead or co-author of at least 5 clinical research studies published in internationally recognized journal(s)
  • At least 5 years of experience as Principle Investigator and/or directing, overseeing clinical research 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of pharmacological strategies for the medical management of detoxification.
  • Knowledge of pharmacological and psychotherapeutic strategies for treatment of medical, mental, emotional or behavioural disorders.
  • Ability to lead and/or participate in an MDT delivering clinical care in line with evidence-based practices/guidelines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence based psychosocial interventions for treatment of substance use disorder.
  • Possess expertise in understanding internationally accepted basis of addiction predisposition, causation, epidemiology, treatment and models of recovery.
  • Skills to deliver individual, family and group psychotherapy and/or education.
  • Proficient in speaking and writing English. [Arabic language speaking and writing proficiency in addition to English proficiency preferred]
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
