Chief, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology

Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at Unity Health Toronto. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2021 or as mutually agreed upon.  This appointment is for a five-year term renewable upon successful review.

Unity Health Toronto, a network of Catholic Healthcare institutions, is comprised of St. Michael’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare. Our health network serves patients, residents and clients across the full spectrum of care, spanning primary care, secondary community care, tertiary and quaternary care services to post-acute through rehabilitation, palliative care and long-term care, while investing in world-class research and education. The network has over 1,000 inpatient adult beds and 288 long-term care beds, with 50,000 admissions, 780,000 ambulatory visits and 177,000 Emergency Department visits annually.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a leading academic health science centre, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Critical care and trauma, heart disease, neurosurgery, and care of the homeless are among some of the hospital’s recognized areas of expertise. Through the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, which make up the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, research and education at St. Michael’s Hospital are recognized and make an impact around the world. St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a community teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto that serves the communities of West Toronto and beyond. Providence Healthcare offers inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation to adults of all ages, as well as palliative care. An active community partner, Providence offers clinics to promote recovery and well-being, caregiver support, an adult day program for people with dementia, and long-term care for 288 residents.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine includes the divisions of Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, as well as a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. The laboratory staff, including 25 physicians, 4 clinical PhDs and 4 research scientists, are responsible for the laboratory service, teaching and academic activities. The department’s strategic plan includes a focus on diagnostic innovation, test utilization and clinical engagement. The Laboratory Medicine department has an exceptional reputation in education and has strong areas of focus in collaborative and basic research, including coagulation, renal cancer and gastrointestinal disease as well as provincial and national contributions to the development of professional practices.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic individual with proven administrative experience and strong leadership skills who, as Chief, will continue to foster excellence in laboratory medicine and teaching while assuming the major role of leading the growth and development of research within the Department. The qualified applicant shall hold a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, and be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario and should be eligible to warrant

appointment to the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology of the University of Toronto, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Estimated remuneration will be commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
