The Environmental Health Services (EHS) at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) constitutes the primary scientific, research, policy, and program resource for environmental health at the BCCDC.

 

Reporting to the Medical Director, Environmental Health Services; the Environmental Public Health Physician supports the Medical Director and engages in environmental health programs and projects that support:

  • The five regional Health Authorities and the First Nations Health Authority in meeting their management and service delivery responsibilities;
  • The provincial Ministry of Health in meeting its policy, legislation and stewardship responsibilities;
  • The Office of the Provincial Health Officer in meeting its legislated and public health leadership responsibilities.      

 

The Environmental Public Health Physician will also work with staff of the National Collaborating Centre in Environmental Health (NCCEH) hosted by the BCCDC to provide medical and scientific input to work plans, projects and other knowledge translation activities undertaken by the NCCEH.

 

Environmental Health Services provides expert consultation services, support the implementation of core programs, provide research and evaluation support, and assist with training, education, and coordination of provincial programs. Working with the Medical Director, the Environmental Public Health Physician will be expected to collaborate with senior scientific and program staff that deliver a wide variety of environmental health related services and programs.

 

This position requires a medical license to practice in BC with RCPSC certification or equivalent qualifications in a specialty related to environmental health, such as community medicine or occupational medicine. The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of post-graduate training in fields related to environmental health such as toxicology, epidemiology, risk assessment and control of environmental hazards coupled with practical experience in responding to environmental health issues and the development of policy to mitigate risks from environmental hazards. Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of regulatory agencies, policies, legislation, and processes that govern and are otherwise relevant to environmental health in BC is essential. Emerging areas of interest at the BCCDC include the intersection of the environment and chronic disease prevention, the health impacts of climate change, and healthy built environments. The candidate must be eligible for a clinical appointment at UBC. Understanding of the structure and mandates of Health Authorities in the province is an asset.

 

The candidate is expected to possess strong communication skills with the ability to communicate with a wide range of employees and stakeholders. The mandate of the role includes leadership, administrative skills, and planning and managing projects. The ability to think strategically, envision, motivate and set direction, with political acumen will be called upon. The candidate will be skilled at building collaborative relationships and partnerships, be population focused with a commitment to prompt resolution of service issues. The adoption of evidence-based best practices, continuous learning and risk management round out the skills we are looking for.
