QUALITY & PATIENT SAFETY APPLIED RESEARCH CHAIR

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

IWK Health, in partnership with the IWK Foundation, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health, and Nova Scotia Department of Health & Wellness, is recruiting a Quality & Patient Safety Applied Research Chair. This is an outstanding opportunity for a leader whose ambition is to advance and promote education, discovery, and capacity development in patient safety and quality improvement in Nova Scotia.

The Chair is responsible for leading and supporting research, learning, and knowledge translation in the areas of quality improvement and patient safety to enhance healthcare across the province. The Chair is involved in the design, development, and evaluation of curricula and approaches to preventing patient harm, providing advice on the successful implementation of these safety practices, and promoting the most effective strategies for spreading these practices. Building on the established quality improvement and safety work already underway within both health authorities and in the health system, the Chair will continue to support a robust and focused approach in keeping safety and quality care as a top health care priority and advancing a safety culture by expanding knowledge and designing approaches for scale-up and knowledge mobilization.

The Chair will engage with a full spectrum of stakeholders who use progressive and mixed research methods ranging from advanced quantitative data analytics, observational and in-situ studies, simulations, and qualitative approaches to explore contextual factors that impact the uptake of quality and safety practices. Key performance indicators of safety, including hospital acquired and surgical infection rates, and serious safety events will be central to ongoing monitoring and surveillance of safety at the IWK Health and Nova Scotia Health and elsewhere in the health system. In order to provide guidance to the Chair, an Advisory Committee on Quality and Patient Safety will be established.

The Quality and Patient Safety Applied Research Chair is based at IWK Health in partnership with Dalhousie University, and works provincially with the Nova Scotia Health, Nova Scotia Department of Health & Wellness and other health system stakeholders. The incumbent will be a healthcare professional (MD or PhD) who will be given an appointment within an established IWK department and cross-appointment with the associated Dalhousie University department. This is a tenure track position and will carry a five year appointment, renewable for successive five year terms upon successful review.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. IWK Health, Nova Scotia Health, and Dalhousie University are committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. We encourage applications from Aboriginal people, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.

The review of applications for this position will commence as soon as the competition closes. To apply for this exceptional opportunity, interested applicants are asked, by December 1, 2020, to submit a current CV and a statement outlining their academic, clinical, and scholarly interests; and the names and contact information of three referees to the attention of:
