Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Anaesthesia, at Unity Health Toronto, St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC). St. Joseph’s is a fully accredited community teaching hospital within the Unity Health Toronto network. Unity Health Toronto is Canada’s largest Catholic Academic Health Sciences System and is affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Employing approximately 2500 staff, along with 400 Credentialed Staff physicians serving approximately 400 beds, St. Joseph’s provides primary, secondary and selected tertiary services to the West Toronto region. The Department of Anaesthesia supports multiple Programs within the Health Centre. The Anaesthesia Chief sits on the Peri-operative leadership Committee with the Chief of Surgery and Senior Program Director in overseeing the Operations of the Surgery Program. The St. Joseph's Health Centre Surgery Program is a leader in its field, providing high quality care to meet the diverse surgical needs of their catchment area and the wider community. As a university-affiliated program, the Surgical Program offers a range of care and procedures from thoracic, HPB and General Surgery to Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and Urology. Patients from infancy to the elderly are cared for by St. Joseph’s Health Centre’s exceptional team of surgeons, anaesthetists, health professionals and support staff. There are currently 19 Staff in the Department providing 24/7 supports to the Health Centre.

The Department seeks an outstanding clinical individual with proven strong administrative and leadership skills, in particular with experience and knowledge regarding recruitment and support of community anaesthetists.  The Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department and will foster excellence in patient care services. They will ensure the growth of the clinical and educational programs and will foster collaborations with the site leadership within Unity Health Toronto, at St. Michael’s and Providence Health, along with the Keenan Research Centre, the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and external partners.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and must possess an FRCP(C) Anaesthesia and be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario, and eligible for (at minimum) an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date January 1st , 2021, or as mutually agreed upon. It is expected that the successful candidate will work at St. Joseph’s Health Centre clinically at a 0.5FTE or greater.

The anticipated time commitment will be one day per week for this administrative role. The salary for the administrative role is commensurate with this time commitment.
