Facility Details — Kelowna General Hospital:

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features; 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, modern operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. With the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Fantastic opportunity for a Cardiac Surgeon to join the highly collegial team of talented and dedicated professionals at Kelowna General Hospital’s Interior Heart & Surgical Centre.

Located in the city of Kelowna, the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre is the main referral center for Interior Health (IH) with a catchment population of approximately one million people. The Cardiac Services Program has achieved some of the best outcomes in Canada and provides residents of the BC Interior with the cardiac care they need, right here in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, offering the whole spectrum of cardiac surgical services short of transplantation. Our group of 4 Cardiac Surgeons is growing to 5, with volumes of close to 700 cases per year, supported by the team of 4 Cardiac Surgical Assistants, 4 Interventionists, 9 General Cardiologists, 5 NPs and more than 100 medical and clinical staff, including cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, clinical nursing staff, anaesthesia assistants and support staff. KGH offers Cardiac Surgeons in hospital offices and has an 18 bed Cardiac Medical Unit, a 6 bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU), a 6 bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) and a 14-bed Cardiac Surgery Inpatient (CSIP) ward. Heart transplants and pediatric (child) cardiac surgeries are not performed at KGH.

If you are comfortable working with all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, have expertise in minimally invasive surgery including mitral, endovascular therapy and TAVI, enjoy working in a highly integrated team setting and are excited to further develop our programs and cardiac service delivery, this could be the opportunity for you!

In this position you will also have the opportunity to discover the rewards of clinical teaching with 3rd and 4th year medical students of the UBC Southern Medical Program completing 1-2 week rotations with our program.

A locum experience will be required as part of the recruitment process and as such only applicants eligible for full CSPBC licensure will be considered.

Qualifications:

  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC)
  • Doctorate in Medicine
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
  • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC.
  • Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory.
