Position Profile: The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine at Western University is seeking an innovative clinician or basic scientist of international standing in tissue engineering or translational transplantation with a focus on immunology. The Chair, which is for a 5-year term with the potential for renewal, is expected to bring expertise in, and undertake research related to, the development of novel surgical approaches and therapeutics in transplantation. The position will provide an opportunity for the candidate to take a leadership role in the Matthew Mailing Centre for Translational Transplant Studies and/or the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at London Health Sciences Centre. In addition to research leadership, the successful candidate will be expected to make contributions to the training of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students through teaching, student supervision and mentorship in his/her subspecialty.

Qualifications:

We invite applications from outstanding investigators holding an MD, MD/PhD, PhD, or equivalent advanced degree. Applicants must have demonstrated the ability to publish in the highest quality academic and subspecialty outlets and be a recognized expert in their field of research. Clinician scientist candidates will be expected to provide clinical services in their subspecialty according to the needs of the Department of Medicine.

A successful candidate holding an M.D. or M.D./PhD will be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor/MD in a limited term (Clinical Academic) appointment or at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in a continuing (Clinical Academic) appointment, depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will have completed an accredited subspecialty training program, have received national and international recognition for innovation and medical research and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of excellent leadership skills, as well as the ability to act as a research and clinical mentor for students, residents, fellows, and faculty. The successful candidate should also have experience in transplantation education, with having completed a fellowship in transplantation being preferred. The candidate will have protected research time and hold a primary academic appointment in the Department of Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with a cross appointment in the Department of Surgery, and a potential cross appointment in an appropriate basic science department best suited to his/her discipline(s).

The candidate will have protected research time and hold a primary academic appointment in the Department of Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with a cross appointment in the appropriate basic science department. The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in transplant and/or immunology research and a successful and productive research program. The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of excellent leadership skills, as well as the ability to act as a research mentor for students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

Academic and Clinical Environment: London, Ontario is a world class centre for training and research with facilities spanning two organizations, three main campuses, and two research Institutes: London Health Sciences Centre (University and Victoria Hospitals), St. Joseph’s Health Care London, the Lawson Health Research Institute and Robarts Research Institute. The Department of Medicine has approximately 200 members distributed across 13 divisions, providing clinical care at two main teaching hospitals covering four separate care sites. Post-graduate training programs include over 500 trainees at all levels as well as an undergraduate entry class size of 143 students. The Department has bench and clinical research in many areas including organ transplantation and clinical outcomes with major research programs. The Multi-Organ Transplant Program at LHSC performs nearly 200 transplants annually and has completed almost 6,000 transplants since its inception in 1973. The Matthew Mailing Centre was established in 2003 and includes researchers focused on novel immunotherapy, tissue protection, and advanced microsurgical techniques.

Compensation Details: Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. PhD candidates will receive an academic salary from Western University. Clinical Academic candidates’ compensation will be primarily composed of academic salary; OHIP billings; and Alternative Funding Plan.
