The Department of Psychiatry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care London and Alexandra Marine & General Hospital are inviting applications for a full time clinical academic faculty position in General Psychiatry including Inpatient, Ambulatory, Emergency Psychiatry Services.  This role would entail a 0.8 FTE at Alexandra Marine & General Hospital and at 0.2 FTE at London Health Sciences Centre providing support within the Urgent Care Clinic.

Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) provides healthcare services in Huron County to the community of Goderich and several surrounding municipalities representing a catchment area of approximately 25,000 people. AMGH has twenty Schedule I Inpatient beds and is staffed by an experienced multidisciplinary team, including nursing, social work and psychology. AMGH is a full-service community hospital providing on-call coverage for internal medicine, general surgery, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and obstetrics. The Hospital also offers full-time community psychiatric outpatient/day care facilities for the Towns of Goderich, Clinton, Exeter, Seaforth and Wingham. We offer strong outpatient support, including clinics, day hospital, group and individual treatment focusing on CBT, DBT, and PSR.

The Department of Psychiatry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, is organized around four academic divisions including General Adult Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry.  The Department also has internationally recognized strengths in psychosis, neuroimaging, mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, and developmental disabilities.

Dedicated clinical teachers, clinical researchers, physicians, scientists, and basic scientists support these opportunities along with dedicated and knowledgeable administrative support staff.

Our undergraduate clerkships consistently earn high praise from medical students due to the commitment and enthusiasm of our teaching faculty.  Our vibrant residency program is dedicated to continuous quality improvement, resident engagement, and rigorous assessments and program evaluations.  Building upon the general program, we also have stellar residency programs in geriatric psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry.  Many of our trainees choose to remain in our department post-graduation.

Our faculty also engage in cutting-edge research in the fields of early intervention for psychosis and mood and anxiety disorders, neuroimaging, trauma, neuromodulation, Indigenous health, homelessness, smart technology, consciousness, youth engagement, global mental health, substance usage, and epidemiology.  By partnering with allied research institutes such as Brain & Mind, Robarts, and Lawson Health Research Institute, and calling upon colleagues across the University, our investigators benefit from a wealth of experience, expertise, and collaborations.

London Health Sciences Centre is comprised of Victoria Hospital, the main centre of our acute psychiatry services; University Hospital; and affiliated community teaching clinics. St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s primary psychiatric site is Parkwood Institute, which serves as a regional rehabilitation resources for patients with serious and persistent mental illnesses. The Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care’s mission is to provide specialized assessment and treatment for people in contact with the criminal justice system. St. Joseph's Hospital, Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care, and community clinics complete the St. Joseph’s family of facilities. London Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s share a rich tradition of collaboration. 

Rank (Assistant or Associate Professor) and appointment status (limited term or continuing) will be determined by experience and qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Specialist certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent certification body is required.

The successful candidates will serve as role models and supervisors for our undergraduate medical students, psychiatry residents, and clinical research fellows. Successful candidates will have a strong academic background which includes supervision and training of trainees and demonstrated scholarship. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to collaborate effectively with other members of the health care team and administrative staff. Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance in teaching, research and health care leadership, qualifications (including subspecialty and enhanced training), and experience. Successful candidates seeking research careers must have a record of productivity and eagerness to serve as a research career mentor for trainees.

Alexandra Marine & General Hospital is located in Goderich which sits atop the scenic bluffs overlooking beautiful Lake Huron. The Town of Goderich is known nation-wide as the Prettiest Town in Canada and has been named by Chatelaine magazine as “One of the ten best places to live in Canada” and more recently identified as “One of the 20 great places to live” by 50Plus magazine. Goderich has developed into a prosperous Lake Huron port and is considered to be one of the premier vacation spots in Southwestern Ontario
