The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) together with BC Children’s Hospital at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) invite applications for the position of Head, Department Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatrics, BC Children’s Hospital. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in academic leadership as well as have experience in sustaining and strengthening collaborations with other academic units. The successful applicant is also expected to establish strong clinical and administrative linkages with all six Health Authorities at a provincial, regional and community level across British Columbia. This appointment is for a five (5) year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time UBC appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure and will also hold the James and Annabel McCreary Chair in Pediatrics and the Hudson Family Chair in Pediatrics.

BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province’s most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

The Department of Pediatrics at UBC and BC Children’s Hospital consists of physicians, scientists, allied health professionals and administrative staff trained in pediatric and allied child health disciplines.  Departmental members include full-time, part-time and community-based pediatricians.  The Department’s mandate is to provide leadership and excellence in patient care, education, research and child advocacy.  The Department is a cohesive academic, professional body committed to the advancement of child health care through the delivery of exemplary patient care, teaching, and research.  The UBC Department also brings together the knowledge, skills, expertise and leadership required to provide specialized care to newborns, children and youth through BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital at PHSA. 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in working with the leadership of Health Authority partners to create academic integration of teaching and research into clinical service delivery and Health Human Resource Planning, particularly in areas of academic expertise. The successful applicant will show evidence of building, managing and maintaining high-quality and productive relationships across cultural differences, and having the ability to communicate and interact with empathy, understanding, and respect of diverse perspectives and behaviours.

The successful candidate will bring to this vital position a proven track record of success in senior clinical, academic and administrative leadership and be a proven leader working in a dynamic and complex healthcare environment. The individual will have demonstrated success in supporting career development of faculty members, demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, and a proven record of scholarly excellence at an international level. The successful applicant should hold an MD, be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, and be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
