The Laboratory Medicine Program of Eastern Health (EH) invites expressions of interest for a full time Microbiologist position with the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Public Health and Microbiology Laboratory (PHML).    

Eastern Health is the largest Regional Health Authority (RHA) in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and is accredited with exemplary standing, the highest possible rating, from Accreditation Canada.  It employs over 13,000 employees, provides services to a regional population of more than 300,000 and is responsible for provincial tertiary health services.  

The Provincial Public Health Laboratory and EH Clinical Microbiology Laboratory function as a Division within the Department of Laboratory Medicine, and offer a wide range of routine, specialized and reference services for the entire province in public health and acute care adult and pediatric clinical microbiology. The successful candidate will join a busy team of Clinical Biochemists, Molecular Geneticists, Cytogeneticists, Medical Microbiologists and Pathologists, and provide state of the art laboratory services to EH and the Province.

Reporting to the Division Chief, the successful candidate will have analytical/technical supervisory and clinical service responsibilities for the provincial Public Health and Clinical Microbiology Laboratory located in St. John’s. In addition, this position also provides clinical microbiology consultation to all four Regional Health Authorities regional/rural microbiology laboratories, physicians and other allied health care professionals as required. This position offers the opportunity to work in IQMH accredited laboratories striving to provide high quality standardized public health and clinical microbiology services across the Province.

Through strong formal affiliations with Memorial University, and on the recommendation of the Discipline Chair, the successful candidates may be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment in the Academic Department of Laboratory Medicine and may be expected to participate in collaborative research activities and scholarship (ie: teaching). The ideal candidates will join a dynamic and enthusiastic team and will be expected to have strong communication and excellent interpersonal skills in order to function as consultants to clinicians, laboratory and academic staff

Both MD and PhD Candidates with medical or clinical microbiology credentials are encouraged to apply. PhD candidates ideally should be certified, or eligible for certification by the Canadian College of Microbiologists (FCCM). MD candidates ideally should be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Certification from other accreditation bodies such as the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) and/or experience from other jurisdictions will be assessed on a case by case basis. MD candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador.  Experience in public health, clinical microbiology and/or molecular diagnostics along with an academic research track would be assets.

For MD’s the salary and benefits for this position are to be paid in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement for salaried physicians in NL and commensurate with the level of training and experience.  Clinical Microbiologists salary is paid based on provincial salary grids.
