Chair/Chief, Department of Family Medicine
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (Schulich Medicine) at Western University (Western), London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s) are seeking an innovative and visionary Chair/Chief for the Department of Family Medicine. In keeping with the evolving and dynamic areas of education and research, the successful candidate, will bring energy and creativity to the role, while maintaining the high standards of our College and principles of patient care. The successful candidate will be significantly involved in the ongoing evolution of primary care reform and health care delivery in the region.
The successful candidate must have the vision to expand the strengths of integrated teaching and research programs aligned with Schulich Medicine, Western, Lawson Health Research Institute, LHSC and St Joseph’s. They will work collaboratively with basic and clinical scientists and clinicians. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in education and administration and the ability to engage faculty in teaching, administrative and leadership duties. They will have engaged in competency based medical education including the resources and allocations needed to ensure successful practices in different locations and within different practice models. They will demonstrate a strong understanding of the accreditation processes that take place on a regular basis. The successful candidate will have a track record of innovation in education to support a diverse faculty with research, quality assurance, curriculum design and evaluation in the base family medicine program and the Enhanced Skills program. The successful candidate will engage and support a widely distributed faculty in curriculum development and delivery in Undergraduate Medical Education. This candidate will be an individual who is committed to, and engaged in, the Masters and PhD programs in Family Medicine.
The successful candidate will be invested in seeing the success and growth/expansion of high-quality research in the Department of Family Medicine and specifically the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine. Extensive experience in conducting research in family medicine is preferred.
The successful candidate will have strong leadership, administrative, financial management, and communication skills and be able to advocate for the departmental mission and goals to its partners and to the community. The successful candidate is expected to bring innovation to the Department’s Practice Plan to better integrate all faculty and to promote an equitable climate for research and leadership roles for clinicians of all practice models. The candidate will have the ability to engage and support a diverse and widely distributed faculty in accordance with the practice plan.
The Department of Family Medicine serves a defined geographic region, Southwestern Ontario, and is responsive to the needs of both the urban and rural communities. The Postgraduate Program trains comprehensive family physicians and future leaders in family medicine through a highly adaptable program in urban, rural, and regional settings across Southwestern Ontario. A wide variety of enhanced skills programs allow residents to pursue training in areas of special interest that have been designed to meet local societal needs. In addition to a strong residency program, the Department makes a significant contribution to the undergraduate medical curriculum in multiple settings.
The Department’s Masters in Clinical Science (MClSc) degree program, now in its 44th year, is offered in an on-line format and includes students from all continents. The Department offers a PhD in Family Medicine, focused on producing family physicians who will be competitive family medicine researchers at the highest levels internationally.
The Department of Family Medicine has a significant profile in family medicine research. This research is conducted by members of the Department faculty and through the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine (CSFM). As one of the leading family medicine research programs in North America, the CSFM conducts exemplary interdisciplinary research in family medicine, primary care, health systems and community health that transforms the care of patients, providers, and the population. The CSFM is an integral part of the Department of Family Medicine with a role in residency and graduate education.
The Department of Family Medicine faculty are accountable for many clinical areas, primarily outpatient primary care. In addition, the faculty serves patients in the following areas, acute inpatient, obstetrics and women’s health, sport and exercise medicine, palliative care, emergency medicine, Complex Continuing and Veteran’s Care and Long- Term Care.
Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: fee for service, alternate funding plan and academic support. The successful candidate will hold a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
