The Department of Internal Medicine, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, and Shared Health Manitoba is seeking a clinician-scientist as a geographic full-time (GFT) faculty member in the section of Neurology.  This GFT position would commence January 1, 2022 or as soon thereafter as possible, for a term of five years, renewable upon favourable review.  Salary will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

In cooperation with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and Research Manitoba, the successful candidate will also be named to The Heart and Stroke & Research Manitoba Chair in Clinical Stroke Research.  The purpose of the Chair ($200,000/yr for 5 years, with a minimum of 50%time for research) is to:

• Provide leadership and scholarship in the area of neurological stroke.
• Promote translational, clinical, and epidemiologic research in areas relevant to clinical stroke care, including the impact of sex, gender and ethnicity on stroke presentation, management and outcomes.
• Engage with health system leaders to ensure the research is relevant and responsive to the environment; this includes establishing relationships with decision makers within the Government of Manitoba and in the health care agencies and connecting with service providers (such as emergency medical services).
• Facilitate the development of key research questions and engage with patients, community members, health services, policy community and other stakeholders to ensure research questions are relevant and the answers provide value.
• Promote communication and interaction among researchers in Manitoba whose research is related to clinical stroke care.
• Engage in national and international networks on clinical stroke research.
• Establish a local research network and build the community of practice on clinical stroke research.
• Provide mentorship and opportunities for trainees and new researchers who will pursue careers focused on areas relevant to clinical stroke care.
• Foster a research team that will drive improved health for individuals with a neurologic stroke and will ensure that high quality care is available for these individuals in Manitoba.
• Promote improvements in stroke care rooted in Stroke Best Practices in Manitoba working collaboratively with Heart & Stroke and other key stakeholders.

Based at Health Sciences Centre, the successful candidate will be an MD with a MSc/PhD, or an MD with a rank of Associate or full Professor, with a proven track record in stroke neurology research.  They will have a strong record of publications in high impact journals and peer-reviewed research funding from recognized granting agencies.  The applicant will have demonstrated a high capacity to successfully interact and collaborate with other clinical and basic scientists locally and/or abroad.

Candidates must have senior specialty qualifications in Neurology in the country of current practice and must be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Certification in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is preferred

The Section of Neurology has substantial resources within the health system, primarily at two academic health centres and one community-based hospital.  The 28 faculty members form a section that includes a highly productive and internationally renowned Multiple Sclerosis research group and a strong residency training program.  A new 28-bed acute stroke unit has been announced, and the successful candidate will have their program of research and clinical practice based in this new state-of-the-art facility.
