Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Northern Medical Program

The Department of Psychiatry, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Northern Medical Program. The ideal candidate will be a clinician scientist with expertise in the area of child and youth Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) issues, Psychiatric epidemiology and population mental health, and Indigenous and/or rural health services research. This position will primarily be based at the distributed Northern Medical Program (NMP) site in Prince George, BC, at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), one of the UBC Faculty of Medicine affiliated institutions.

The NMP is a distributed site of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine MD Undergraduate Program, delivered in partnership with UNBC. The NMP is focused on training physicians from and for northern and rural communities in alignment with the social accountability principle of the UBC Faculty of Medicine strategic plan. Along with the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, the Island Medical Program and the Southern Medical Program, this distributed medical program was the first of its kind in North America and has proven to be a highly successful model of distributed education.

This position will report to the Head of the UBC Department of Psychiatry; the Head will consult with the Regional Associate Dean, Northern BC. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a child and youth-centered mental health systems research portfolio in Northern BC that will include focus on early intervention for children and youth with presentations across the mental health diagnostic spectrum and the ability to provide needs-based planning and implementation research to organizations at the local and provincial  levels, including Health Authorities and Ministries to facilitate the translation of epidemiological and clinical evidence into optimal evidence based mental health and addictions policies and services. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other clinicians and scientists committed to early intervention as well as child and youth mental health, particularly in underserved or rural settings. The successful candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the teaching activities of the Department of Psychiatry, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners, primarily in Northern BC for the NMP, Prince George Psychiatry and Family Medicine Programs.

The successful candidate will hold an MD with FRCPC or equivalent qualifications in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, a master’s or doctorate in public health, and have training in psychiatric epidemiology and public health. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest and experience in working with government bodies, academic organizations, public health policies and services, and mental health systems, and will have experience or interest in designing and leading population-based epidemiologic studies, qualitative research, and systemic reviews and meta-analysis. Experience or interest in Indigenous community health and/or rural health settings is desirable. Clinical experience demonstrating the potential to make a significant contribution to patient care and psychiatric education is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, evidence of ability in scholarly activity, and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
