The Laboratory Medicine Program of Eastern Health invites expressions of interest for a Hematopathologist locum and/or full-time position.

Eastern Health is the largest integrated health organization in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). It employs over 13,000 employees, provides services to a regional population of more than 300,000 and is responsible for provincial tertiary health services. 

The successful candidate will join a group of 16 pathologists, medical microbiologists and clinical chemists providing hospital laboratory services.  Our laboratory currently processes approximately 40,000 surgical pathology specimens per year.  On-call coverage is required and shared equitably within the group.  The Health Science Centre is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University.

Through strong formal affiliations with Memorial University, and on the recommendation of the Discipline Chair, the successful candidate may be eligible for a clinical faculty appointment in the Academic Department of Laboratory Medicine and may be expected to participate in collaborative research activities and scholarship (ie: teaching).

The division of hematopathology offers transfusion medicine, bone marrow pathology, flow cytometry, hematology core lab, coagulation, and hemoglobinopathy services. It also provides training to medical laboratory technology students, medical students, and anatomic pathology and other medical residents. Hematopathologists are supported by molecular pathology and cytogenetics laboratories providing testing for various myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms, and by immunohistochemistry laboratories. 

The position will provide medical oversight and interpretative reporting in hematopathology and transfusion medicine. The position will provide services for a wide variety of patient programs including hematology, and for bleeding & coagulation disorders, bone marrow transplantation and blood transfusion. The successful applicant will participate in all aspects of hematopathology and transfusion medicine service and provide on-call coverage.  This includes performing duties in interpretation and reporting of peripheral blood films, bone marrow aspirate and biopsy, flow cytometry and dealing with acute issues in the transfusion medicine, coagulation and hematology laboratories.  The full-time position will also have responsibilities as a provincial consultant, providing medical oversight for rural hospital and community health centers offering basic hematology, coagulation, and transfusion medicine testing, and transfusion services.

To be considered candidates must hold a medical degree and have certification by the Royal College Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification (or equivalent) in Hematological Pathology.  All applicants must be eligible for licensure to practice by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador and must be granted privileges by Eastern Health.
 

Salary and benefits for this position are to be paid in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement for salaried physicians in Newfoundland and Labrador.
