Overall job purpose:

The Medical Editor is responsible for planning, reviewing and revising content for the CMAJ. The Medical Editor participates in commissioning content and appraising new submissions to, as well as developing content for, one or more sections of the journal.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with the Editor-in-Chief or their Deputy to ensure smooth copy flow for articles in one or more sections of CMAJ
  • Take responsibility for appraisal, peer review, editing and development of research submissions to CMAJ, as well as submissions to one other clinical section of the journal
  • Attend and occasionally chair manuscript meetings in which manuscripts and peer reviews are discussed
  • Write editorials for CMAJ as part of an editorial-writing team
  • Participate in strategy development for CMAJ as directed by the Editor-in-Chief or their Deputy
  • Promote CMAJ Group journals at Canadian conferences as directed by the Editor-in-Chief or their Deputy
  • Assist in mentoring the CMAJ’s Editorial Fellow
  • Contribute at regular staff meetings as required to ensure the generation of innovative and clinically useful content

Education:

  • Requires completion of a medical degree
  • Training and experience in critical appraisal of medical research is required
  • Training in medical editing is required

Experience:

  • 3-5 years in a similar role or function
  • Broad experience as a medical editor required
  • Experience as a practicing clinician is required
  • Formal writing experience is desirable
