Earl Russell Chair in Pain Management
Position Profile: The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine at Western University is seeking an innovative physician with demonstrated excellence in chronic pain treatment, exceptional mentoring records and sustained, high levels of research productivity. This Chair will position Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the forefront of Pain Medicine research, ultimately improving outcomes for patients requiring chronic pain diagnoses and treatment. In addition to research leadership, the successful candidate will be expected to make contributions to the training of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate learners through teaching, learner supervision and mentorship in his/her subspecialty. The Chair is for a 5 year term with the potential for renewal.
The Western University Pain Program is an established program that is supported by the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine, Clinical Neurological Sciences and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Pain program provides a robust education program for medical students, residents from a variety of specialties, Pain Medicine residents, a program in continuing medical education and a website.
Educational responsibilities of the Chair will also include (but are not limited to):
- Distribution of an annual Earl Russell Trainee grant for student researchers in Pain Medicine
- Organization of monthly Interdisciplinary Pain Medicine educational rounds for health care professionals and students within the university and community
- Organization of and participation in educational lecture series for medical students at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry
Qualifications: We invite outstanding scientists to apply. The successful candidate will hold an MD or MD/PhD and be a practising anesthesiologist. The candidate must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The candidate must hold specialist certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or Equivalent. Practitioners in other relevant specialties such as and not limited to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, Psychiatry or Neurosurgery will be considered. A successful candidate holding an M.D. or M.D./PhD will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor/MD in a limited term (Clinical Academic) appointment or at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in a continuing (Clinical Academic) appointment, depending on qualifications and experience.
Compensation Details: Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be composed of fee for service, alternative payment plan and academic productivity based compensation (and will provide protected non-clinical time for the successful candidate).
About Us: The Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University (https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/anesthesia) consists of 89 faculty, 40 residents and 20 clinical fellows who are committed to patient-centered quality care. The Department provides clinical service to over 40 operating rooms daily (37,000 surgical procedures per annum) at both London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) University Hospital and Victoria Hospital and at St. Joseph's Health Care London. Collectively, the London Hospitals serve as the tertiary and quaternary referral centre for Southwestern Ontario, a region with a population of over 2 million people.
The multidisciplinary team of the Pain Medicine Program at Western University is located at St. Joseph’s Health Care where we use our skills and expertise to provide assessment and treatment of people with chronic, non-cancer pain. The team consists of anesthesiologists, neurologists, pharmacists, physiatrists, psychologists, registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers.
As Anesthesiologists, we provide the spectrum of medical care from conducting preoperative anesthesia assessment to performing the most advanced life-supporting techniques in all perioperative settings such as ambulatory surgery, subspecialty surgery, obstetric, pediatric care, out-of-OR interventional procedures, acute and chronic pain management, blood conservation management, post-anesthetic care unit, cardiac surgery recovery unit and intensive care units. In particular, the CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics) research and training centre at the LHSC and Western University is a national centre of excellence for advanced surgical training and research in minimally invasive surgery procedures such as cardiac, thoracic, urology, general and fetal surgery. This provides an excellent training facility and program for anesthesia in the latest and most advanced minimally invasive surgery management.
The Anesthesia Department provides teaching and training to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in anesthesia and allied health care fields both at Western University and Fanshawe College. The Department is well known for its clinical and research excellence in cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, transplantation, critical care and pain medicine.
