Correctional Health Services (CHS) is an integral part of British Columbia’s health care system and the newest service of BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS). As a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority, we provide health services at all 10 Correctional Centres across British Columbia.

 

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, BCMHSUS, the Medical Director is responsible for the delivery of high quality medical care and substance use treatment needs for people incarcerated in provincial correctional facilities. Working in partnership with the Executive Director, Correctional Health and Regional Forensic Psychiatric Clinics, the Medical Director provides leadership and management for day-to-day medical operations with a strong emphasis on primary care and substance use treatment for the incarcerated clients. Key accountabilities including clinical oversight, strategic medical leadership, physician recruitment and retention, physician-related activities and management of medical sessions/MSP billings and other physician-related supports. The Medical Director works in close collaboration with BCMHSUS leaders and members of the regional corrections health team and handles physician related matters on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer. The Medical Director also provides leadership for medical committees and subcommittees within BCMHSUS. In addition, there is an opportunity for the Medical Director to work as a CHS physician within the program at one of the provincial correctional sites. The time commitment required for providing clinical services to be discussed upon successful interview.

As the successful candidate, you will have demonstrated both a commitment to clinical and academic excellence, and the leadership and management skills necessary to ensure high quality clinical service and academic productivity. You must be eligible for provisional or full licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Certification with the College of Family Physicians, or equivalent is mandatory. Experience in Correctional Health and/or additional certification or training is an asset.

PHSA together with BCMHSUS took on responsibility for the delivery of health care services in BC Corrections facilities in October 2017. BCMHSUS is mandated to improve the quality and continuity of care for clients across the province during their time in correctional facilities and as they reintegrate into the community. This will help to improve access to primary health care, as well as mental health and substance use support for inmates; key needs that have been identified not just in BC, but internationally. Provide trauma informed care to clients with physical or mental health needs and/or concurrent psychiatric and/or substance abuse/misuse disorders.
