Resident Physician Haines Junction, Yukon

The Government of Yukon is seeking the services of a physician to work in collaboration and partnership with the Haines Junction Community Health Centre nurses to provide primary care in the Village of Haines Junction along with visiting and virtual care services to the communities of Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing and Beaver Creek.

The successful candidate will work as a member of a collaborative health care team. The model follows “the right provider at the right time for the right reason” which allows all team members to work to the full scope of their role and maintain competencies in that role while improving access at the right level of care to meet the client’s need. The ideal candidate is dedicated to delivering insured health services as defined under the Health Care Insurance Plan Act and regulations for the benefit of any person who seeks the services of a physician in the rural and indigenous communities of Haines Junction, Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing and Beaver Creek.

About the Village of Haines Junction

The Village of Haines Junction lies on the edge of a vast and spectacular wilderness and is a gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve. The community lies within the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, where Southern Tutchone people have resided for thousands of years. 

Haines Junction is a two-hour drive (154 kilometres) from Whitehorse, located at the junction of the Alaska and Haines Highways. The catchment area for Haines Junction includes the Alaska Highway north to km 1630.4 (Christmas Creek) and south to km 1518.4 (Champagne) and Haines Highway west to km 102.2 (Summit). The 2019 Census results for the village identify First Nations people as 35.9 percent of a population of approximately 981. 

Haines Junction Health Centre

The Haines Junction Health Centre is equipped to provide daily clinics for emergency, acute and primary care, community health programs and 24-hour emergency services by Primary Health Care Nurses (PHCN) in the absence of a physician. Limited point of care testing, referred out specimen collection, limited x-rays, and EKGs are all performed in Haines Junction, as well as having telehealth capabilities.

The Haines Junction Health Centre is open from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and is staffed with three (3) primary health care nurses practicing in an expanded scope with rotating nurse on call 24/7/365 and a community public health nurse.

Minimum Qualifications

•    Medical degree
•    Hold certificate or be eligible for certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
•    Eligible for a provisional or regular license to practice medicine in Yukon
•    Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community based health care
