The Departments of Oncology and Family Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary in conjunction with Cancer Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Clinical Departments of Oncology and Family Medicine, Calgary Zone, invite applications for a full-time Contingent Term academic position within the discipline of Palliative Medicine, at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level.

The successful applicant must have strengths in health services research and clinical trials design for innovative delivery of Palliative Care services. These areas align with the research vision of the Division and the Strategic Clinical Network in Cancer Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services. The division of Palliative Medicine comprises approximately 20 highly collegial faculty members contributing to its research, education and patient care endeavors. The Palliative Medicine program in Calgary offers diverse research opportunities in cancer and chronic diseases and integrated models of care delivery from advance care planning to grief support. The successful candidate will seek appointment as a member of the Calgary Zone Palliative Care and End of Life Care (PEOLC) service. Physicians consult to this service, which is administered via the Department of Family Medicine, and report to the PEOLC Medical Director

Qualifications include an MD and eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Certification with the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) and /or Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) are required. Training/experience in Palliative Medicine or special competency in one of the Oncology disciplines are required.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must have up to five years of training or experience in Palliative Medicine or special competency in one of the Oncology disciplines (or equivalent) and commensurate evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision, evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must have five plus years of training or experience in Palliative Medicine or special competency in one of the Oncology disciplines (or equivalent) and commensurate evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision, evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.

The successful candidate will join a cancer research environment at the University of Calgary that is rapidly expanding in anticipation of the opening of a New Calgary Cancer Centre (NCCC) in 2023. The NCCC will have over 110,000 square feet of purpose built wet and dry research space. Areas of research emphasis in the NCCC will include basic cancer biology, early cancer detection, precision oncology & experimental therapeutics, immune oncology, cancer epidemiology and prevention, psychosocial oncology and survivorship, childhood cancer and blood disorders, and investigator-led programs in cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder, lung, breast, colon, brain, multiple myeloma, and others. Other strengths in the environment are Alberta’s strengths in health data, bioinformatics, Alberta Cancer Outcomes Research Network (ACORN) and seven large health research institutes including the Arne Charbonneau Cancer Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health.
