Clinic Details — Kelowna General Hospital:

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features; 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery.

Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, modern operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. With the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Practice Details:

We are seeking a full time General/Non-interventional Cardiologist to join our team at Kelowna General Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to join the highly integrated and collegial team of talented and dedicated professionals at Kelowna General Hospital’s Interior Heart & Surgical Centre.

Located in the city of Kelowna, the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre is the main referral center for Interior Health (IH) with a catchment population of approximately one million people. The Cardiac Services program provides residents of the BC Interior with the cardiac care they need, right here in the heart of the Okanagan Valley and offers the whole spectrum of cardiac surgical services short of transplantation. Currently our integrated group consists of 4 Interventionists, 8 General Cardiologists, 4 Cardiac Surgeons, 2 Electrophysiologists, 4 Cardiac Surgical Assistants and 6 NPs. KGH has an 18 bed Cardiac Telemetry Unit, a 6 bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU), a 6 bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) and a 14-bed Cardiac Surgery Inpatient (CSIP) ward. Heart transplants and pediatric (child) cardiac surgeries are not performed at KGH.

The Cardiac Surgery Program is comprised of more than 100 medical and clinical staff, including cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, clinical nursing staff, anaesthesia assistants and support staff. KGH offers full cardiac services including general and interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, TAVI and electrophysiology. Both inpatient and outpatient consultation services are offered. Multiple subspecialty cardiac clinics are on site focussing on rapid access (RACE), device, heart rhythm, atrial fibrillation, heart function and amyloid care. Diagnostic services include transthoracic and transesophageal echo, stress echo, treadmill testing, nuclear cardiology / PET, CT, MRI, ECG, Holter and other devices.

Preference would be given to candidates with sub-speciality echo, heart failure, rehab or cardiac intensive care training and experience. In addition to our ability to continuously develop our skills, we are a training site for medical students and residents going through their programs through UBC’s Southern Medical Program. Both medical students and residents rotate through Kelowna General Hospital as part of core and elective experiences.

Qualifications:

  • Eligible for Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
  • Doctorate in Medicine
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
  • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
  • Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory
  • Subspecialty certification in cardiology and echocardiogram, heart failure, rehab or cardiac intensive care

Call Schedule:

  • Hours of work: Full Time
  • On call requirements: 1:9

Compensation:

  • Payment Structure: Fee for Service + MOCAP, level 1
  • Estimated Gross Income: $600,000/annually
  • Overhead costs associated with group private practice only and shared by group

Additional Incentives

  • Relocation assistance up to $10,000 maximum or $15,000 maximum if move is over 3,000 kms/international (with eligible receipts)
