In the summer months, bikers and hikers can take full advantage of the beautiful Elk Lakes Provincial Park that borders Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and Kananaskis. Sparwood’s alpine setting in the midst of lakes, glacier-fed rivers and woodlands make it hunting and fishing paradise. The nearby Flathead valley is often called the “Serengeti of North America” and has some of the most diverse wildlife in North America.

Clinic Details - Sparwood Primary Health Care Centre:

Sparwood Primary Health Centre is a multidisciplinary clinic. The core of practice is the patient's medical home and primary care network. Team based care is provided by a family physician, or nurse practitioner, a primary care RN, chronic disease RN, community RT. In addition patients have access to social workers, home care, counseling, dieticians, physiotherapy, addictions and maternity care. Our care staff are trained to provide a full scope of care.

The Sparwood Health Centre has opportunities for Family Physicians to work within our collegial and collaborative group of physicians, with nurse practitioner complement. The care team is cohesive with a focus of team based care.

The Sparwood Health Centre has an interdisciplinary team that provides emergency services, ambulatory care, home health services, laboratory/diagnostic imaging, public health, chronic disease management, mental health/substance use and Primary Care Nursing.

Additional support services include a Dietitian, Diabetes Educator, Respiratory Therapist, Physiotherapist and 4 medical office assistants. There is also a satellite dialysis unit that runs 6 days/week. The Emergency Department is staffed with 1 RN with the support of a lab and x-ray technician. There are approximately 5,500 visits to the ER per year. The emergency department closes at 7 pm – there is no overnight call requirement in Sparwood. Weekend and evening call is max 1 in 5 for a full time contract (possibly moving to 1 in 6.) Part-time contract would be half that call, 1:10.

You will find the perfect balance of medical clinic and rural emergency department work here. In emergency situations this community and ER staff may be supported by the High Acuity Response Team (HART) based out of Cranbrook. HART team consists of a critical care nurse as well as an RT. The Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARs) service, based out of Alberta, can support Sparwood in emergency situations and is a 55 minute flying time for STARS to Sparwood from Calgary. Additionally there is an airstrip 15 minutes north of Sparwood where a fixed wing transport team from Vancouver can also land.

Option to have privileges at Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie and Facility privileges: Physicians working in Sparwood qualify for locum coverage through locums for British Columbia (43 days/year.) The service contract is compatible with incorporation. NOTE: Funding is pro-rated for physicians working less than full-time

Qualifications:

  • Eligible for The College of Family Physicians of Canada Cert. (CCFP)
  • Doctorate in Medicine
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
  • Eligible for licensure with CPSBC
  • Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory

Call Schedule:

  • Hours of work: 0900-1700hrs clinic; 0800-1900hrs MOCAP on call
  • On call requirements: 1:5 FT or 1:10 PT

Compensation:

  • Payment Structure: Service Contract

Estimated Gross Income

  • Max annual contract amount is $282,734 (1.0 FTE) base salary + incentives (rural retention, rural CME, signing bonus etc.)

RSA Incentives

  • Recruitment Incentive: $20,000
  • Relocation: $9,000 - $15,000 based on move location
  • Fee Premium: 16.10%
  • Retention Flat Fee: $18,533.40
  • Rural CME: max of $ 5720/year after 4 years in practice

Funding is pro-rated for physicians working less than full-time and this also applies to the Recruitment Incentive and Annual Retention Flat Fee plus incentives
